It has become more and more hard to engage and encourage kids to learn to write. I have been continually bombed by the press and the web with interactivity and vision, and as her instructor it has become much more challenging for me to competit. If you can immerse yourself in this emotion through interaction, who wants to do so?
It is this test that has prompted me to explore how I can use these tools and more energetic ways of getting kids to use their reading abilities and make them imaginative and thought-provoking authors. A way that is sure to inspire kids is the use of videos, especially television and cinematography.
YouTube and other material on YouTube and other educational venues will help kids research and evolve ideas. Begin with the goal and make sure that your videoclips meet the linguistic and textual characteristics of each text typ. I used Jason and the Argonauts' movies in my 3rd grade, for example, to help them discover the main characteristics of the myth and legend game.
A further year 3 activities used the powers of Doctor Who to look at the emotions of the characters. Then I used it as a way to explore the roles of tempo, motion, attitude and personality to help the kids organize their writing. A series of documentary films about WWII soldiers and soccer player Walter Tull allowed the kids to get a time line of what happened in his lifetime to help them create a memo.
The use of visually -guided instructions makes the kids safer and more readable. You have had enough free space to develop and debate your terminology and then adjust it to the texts you want to work on. At the same thematic level, it also makes it possible to convey understanding, text design and typesetting structure in an interesting and useful way for the schoolchildren.
A further way that can help kids to unite emotively is to see for themselves. I had great sucess to help the kids develop their words and creating thrilling emotive writing with this methodology. I have worked with my 6th grade on the topic "The Race", for example.
Arming myself with a starting pistol, I took the group to the field to show them how it was to get ready for a races, listen to the starting pistol and then drive the races - see this lecture in a Teachers Media produced film.
Since the implementation of a imaginative syllabus at schools, the commitment and encouragement of the kids to work. It provides more ways to expand and evolve children's writing by integrating them into a theme that is covered throughout the syllabus. The complete submersion in a theme can be very strong for kids and allows them to research and understanding ideas that were previously reserved for schoolchildren.
Year 5 on South Africa was associated with the Journey to Jo'Burg and provided a comprehensive investigation of the land and the timeframe of the work. It was this theme that lead to writing about apartment heat, personality and biography of Nelson Mandela. This type of activities would have been reserved for KS3, but the consequent connection between the Foundation's disciplines and English made it possible for the kids to reach and savour them and to do a job that was far better than anything they could have done in a seperate, independent class of alphabetisation.
There are many theatre technologies that allow kids to immerse themselves in the lives and worlds of a figure. By promoting hot-seating, moral codes, debate and improvement, kids can improve their comprehension of a text and their capacity to speak their mind in writing. This in turn will help the kids to be more thoughtful and creative in their writing.
Instead of measuring myself against the interactivity of playing with kids and using them in the world' s electronic world, I am more like a jagab. To steal the ideas and outlooks and use them as a hook and new ways to inspire the kids, inspires them in one lecture and it is this thrill and this commitment that means that they will do most.
