Hynes shows you how to select abundant detail while at the same time maintaining a clear overview of your work. If you are making a fictitious figure, you are building the delusion of implying a true figure instead of reproducing it.

In four presentations on the subject of developing your own personality, you will learn how to create realistically thinking and acting figures. The Craft Great Dialogue: One session with two presentations highlights the balance between dialog and narrative, with samples from the work of Charles Dickens, Alice Munro and Toni Morrison and the professor's own fiction.

In order to do this, you need to organize your history, which can be one of the most difficult parts of writing fiction. You will see in this session of three lectures that much depends on the angle from which it is narrated. Professor Hynes examines the spectrum of possible narratives, from the all-knowledge of Middle March to the free discourses of light in August and from the dual awareness of Huck Finn to the untrustworthy storyteller of Aspern papers.

The time also has an important part to play in fiction - the age of the scene of a plot, the order of things and the timings with which information is disclosed to the readers are all decisive factors. The last part of this course takes you back from the idiosyncratic aspects of stage composing and looks at history as a whole.

A working author, Professor Hynes is able to combine his doctrine of the fictional element with the knowledge of his own work. It uses illustrative literary histories as well as his own stories and stories from his own times in the foxholes of novel writing. Sharing his own process and technique, he even explores concrete instances of where he fought as a struggler and shows how he has overcome these problems.
