So how do they work?
There is little reason for bad writing abilities in a student who uses the Write Source book. Every layer samples the same information, develops and fills loopholes with each new book while maintaining the same basic principle and approaches. The texts are funny and colourful without sacrificing any of the real teaching, so that the children are not only amused.
To write well, children need to be able to grasp fundamental language and think clearly. Write Source software is conceived to reach both ends so that teaching never becomes one-sided. As it is accumulative, pupils entering a later class who have less compositional expertise than the early works may have difficulty keeping up; but those who are able to finish each book in turn will almost certainly become skilled and imaginative comicators.
At the beginning we should point out that these are sacred lyrics, which can lead to some parent finding samples or practices somewhat objectionable. In essence, there are two sets under the headline Write Source. Write Source is a full K-12 syllabus of textbook, activities book, teacher's handbook and CD-ROMs.
A K-12 set of textbooks; these contain more or less the same contents as the syllabus but are less visually, more thorough and contain a great deal of research and typing aids in the students' textbooks, which are only found in the teacher's manuals of the other set.
The Write Source syllabus has a text book for each stage, along with a teachers' book, an evaluation book, a daily language workouts book with teacher's book and a daily language book with teacher's book. Every text book is equally formatted: the pupils learn about the typing processes, the ways of spelling, reading and studying and the fundamental aspects of it.
An author's resource (tips on research, styles, terminology, selecting and limiting a subject, etc.) and the Proofreader's Guide (a handbook for editors and mechanics). Teachers' issues contain each full-color page in smaller size, along with hints for presentations and additional help. Each time a new approach is implemented, our undergraduates internalise it through a set of practical lessons and tutorials, where they learn to write well in each phase by following clear outlines.
While these are of an unexpectedly high standard (terms such as "category" and "expository" are already used in the first grade), everything is presented thoroughly and in a way that children can comprehend at the desired state. Anyone for Charlotte Mason's classic upbringing and study may wonder where the diktat and copy practices are hiding, but they will seek in futility.
Nevertheless, the Write Source approach has its own merits - it is not that important items are omitted, they are only tackled faster and not in the same order. This course does not teach the writers that clear thought is not important for good typing, they simply begin to teach argumentation and thought from the beginning, alongside fundamental machinic.
Pupils are taught language, phrase, whole sentence, phrase complexity, etc. At the same time, they are learning the different aims of the letter (explanation, analysis of the bibliography, face-to-face article, etc.), how to select a target group oriented theme, how to do research and all the other aspects of the letter that demand clear thought rather than submissive awareness of precept.
While the Assessment Book contains testing, the Skills Book offers reinforcing tutorials for editorial and proof-reading, and the Daily Language Workouts offers mechanics-based tutorials, as well as write instructions and ideas-generator. This CD-ROM is aimed at pupils with hands-on activities to deepen their knowledge and to lead them through the concept.
Every year the same ideas are dealt with, but supplemented and deepened with new ones. Repeating is great for getting children to write well by themselves, and constantly working on, revising and showing the work to others who will be part of any initial typing task means that they will appreciate the importance of clearness and creativeness.
Featuring Write Away, Writer's Inc. and Write Source 2000 songs, the second part of the programme is almost a reflection of the more curriculum-oriented programme, except without the whistling and jingle. Same supplementary textbooks and teacher's expenses are available, but the contents are less fun (less illustration, etc.) and faster.
It is one of the better K-12 writeings. The biggest disadvantage is that, since it is a SECRET programme, there is no characteristic building block, but the write statement is of a similar standard (a hole that you can always fill yourself). Every class is based on the previous one, and every book will bring pupils nearer to the championship until they are able to complete college-level tasks at the end of high schools (the last book in the second cycle is even known as Write for College).
Getting into the Write Source syllabus from another programme can be tricky, as the progress and levels of work are likely to vary. However the second set can be used as an easy supplement to make it easier for pupils to use another programme. However, if you begin with Write Source, there is no need not to end with Write Source, and although policy propriety can become old (especially in later texts), this can also be used in a positive way as a starting point for discussion of right thought and the use of common sense by Christians.
Most of the material in this range is not available for two easy reasons: firstly, the margin is too low to be profitable; secondly, it is so often reworked that it is hard for us to keep up.
