What is a short story?

I' m writing it, I' m reading it, I' m in love with it. However, every short story, like every story that has ever been told, has to get involved. Short-story writers do not have the luxury of introducing and developing characters at a leisurely pace. So what's a short story? So what are short films?

Short stories: Although not always recognised as such, short histories are regarded as a literary discipline and have never been esteemed again. Annual short story collections have included the O. Henry Prize and The Best British Short and The Best American Short Story-all awarded. Numerous short story authors such as Carver, Chekhov, Mansfield and Joyce have reissued their work with new critically acclaimed launches.

This short story is everywhere, not just in New York. Yet it is still hard to tell a short story. In the first place, a short story is not a dense novel. At the same time, short films are not a single sequence or even a figur. Munro has three different tales, several sophisticated figures and the quintessence of a full story.

A short story can be a parable, a story, a folktale, an Allegory, a riddle. Victoria Hislop's three short story collection of love, life and loss is a star collection that shows the breadth of history over the last 150 years. One short story is many, many things. But the simplest way to tell a short story is to describe how it has evolved since it became famous about 150 years ago.

Short histories have been around as long as people; verbal narratives, folktales, fables and allegories are short in a way. There were short histories even before the novel was written in the 16th to 17th centurys, but when short histories appeared as a fashionable literature in the eighteenth centurys, they were still considered only as a short version of the novel.

Chekovs 1882 story "The Green Scythe" was described as a short novel and even had a chapter, although it is less than 20 pages long. Earlier short story authors, such as Henthorne and Melville, were authors of novels who write short histories for practical use, or mass publications of magazines. Melville Bartleby the Scrivener is a good example of early short storytelling; a dense story with refined speech, a clear storyline and a mature novella.

Perhaps the first novelist known for short story writing was Guy de Maupassant (1850-93), a mid-1900s essayist from France. Like The Necklace, his tales tell of the despairing acts of people tied by powers stronger than themselves; societal structure, institution, even faith.

But Maupassant's short novels (and O'Henry like him) were also shorter than what we would call short novels. The short story was first created by the US writer Edgar Allan in 1809-49, who wrote Tell-Tale Heart and Cask of Amontillado. The grandfather of the short story, he had two major articles.

Firstly, his writings were highly emotional, often suppressing the story and turning short narratives of dense fiction into a powerful emotionalism. This was less important for Poe and became less important for the short story. Secondly, most important, led the idea of uniting the image as part of the defining short story.

While we recall him for his goth fictions, his poignant poems and his horrific writings, he merits more recognition as the main person responsible for the short story series. Second only to him was the author of short novels, the author Anton Chekhov[3] (1860-1904). Tschechow published many tales between 1870 and 1890, but his tales were never published in English until 1910, where they had an enormous impact and still have a very modern feeling.

Chekhov was extremely one-of-a-kind, reducing the notion of history even further by using metaphors, evocative words and dialogues that point to what is going on, but not explicit. A of Chekhovs best-known tales is The Lady with the Toy Dog, a story about an elderly, unluckily wedded man, Gomov, who encounters a young lady who at first sees her as an accidental thing, but oddly enough feels attracted to her and has developed her relationships so far that she faces the real world that no amount of her affection may be that she can't be together anymore.

Chekhov doesn't give us enough information to know if Gomov is in lover, lustful or just Ionely. It is the absence of information, responses, certainty, even morality, that is the foundation of contemporary rhetoric and, through Chekhov, a basic element of contemporary short story.

Yet another contemporary novelist who added a pivotal element to the short story as we know it was the irish novelist James Joyce (1882-1941), Dubliner's story, released in 1914 but penned in the last 10 years, probably did not have the impact of Chekhov (because he had not yet been English translated), but was remarkably similar in thematic.

Joyce's major paper was the idea of ├ępiphany, an original biblical word that means "awakening" in the new world. Joyce used epiphonia - or the absence thereof - to show psychologic changes in histories that would otherwise have ended in the uncertain. Joyce's story The Entcounter is about two young men who meet a paedophile without knowing it and while a young man leaves his boyfriend, he finally comes back and rescues him unconscious.

This last, last line of the story shows the storyteller at last recognizing his esteem for the dangers he was in, and perhaps, thankfulness for his mate. Throughout and after the First World War short histories were spread, esteemed and evolved in many different shapes and genres. The most important authors are Rudyard Kipling, Kathrine Mansfield, Virginia Woolf, John Cheever and Faulkner.

In 1938-1988, Raymond Carver, an US author, began working later in his career, and although his styles were changing from his early to his later work ( (in which he became more upbeat and more nuanced), his styles were always extreme minim. It had enormous impact on today's short story authors (many new authors like him are doing it without noticing).

This short story evolved in a different way from Angela Carter (1940-92, a UK-based, feminist writer who created magical realist narratives in which she transformed fairytales and other folktales into narratives in which women are authorized, smart and often conquer. This is another example of a short story writer Flannery O'Connor (1924-65) who writes about the extreme poverty of the American South.

And the moods of their tales are. Instead of going into the many, many writers who write today, I would like to emphasize two that couldn't be more different, but both are very powerful in showing how wide the short story category has become. She won the Man Booker International Prize in 2013 for her short story collections, which are all very inventive.

I' ve written more about her and why she is important here. How can I do that? One of the other very different short story writers I referred to at the beginning of this reply is Alice Munro (1931-). It' banal to call their tales compact fiction, but they are, short fiction.

It creates several personalities, sets, scenes and even cover art about life span in her tales her subjects are mostly located in personal (i.e. not political) charity, failures, fear, solitude etc.. I like hatred, friendship, courtship, loveship, marriage, nettles and the loves of a good woman.

So what's a short story? There are three things that short storytelling requires: oneness, concentrated thinking and impress. Oneness means that the story must revolve around one thing: a subject, a figure, a situation unlike a novel that will be multi-faceted. Compressed thought, a kind of shape, is needed because you don't have the words, so every words must mean a great deal, and every words counts.

This is the best succinct description I can give for a short story (a para-phrase of something Poe[love pain! ] believed): It is a short story, a play in which every individual phrase, every words, every person, every event, every sequence counts, because everyone is contributing to the whole.
