Voluntary Freelancer Writing Jobs
Quicker than you could say "will work for free", I went to the website of an organisation that serves homeeless people and sent an e-mail with my writing service on a pro bono outfit. I had even completely forgotten that when I got an excited e-mail from the agency's head of engineering the next morning, I was upset.
While I struggled enough with the limitation of my free hours associated with finishing my remunerated work, pounding more remunerated work and keeping a house, I had no free will. The best thing about volunteer work for a non-profit purpose is the variety of tasks - non-profit employees (and volunteers) are inclined to be "all-rounders" due to the organisations restricted budget.
As a volunteer you will probably be able to do things you have never tried before. Thought after I finished my first job (an item for the agency's annual report). Volunteering allows me to be more varied. For example, one organisation I worked with engaged volunteer authors who wrote various topics of psychological well being in newspapers on a month-by-month basis.
As soon as I get through my to-do lists, I am planning to send an articel to a local journal with the organisation I volunteer for. Exercise in writing: But it' so real - voluntary paperwork makes sense on a completely different plane than remunerated paperwork, and somehow it is helping my other letter to become more useful and genuine.
Perhaps it's because volunteer work is helping me to live a more useful and genuine way of living, which of course goes into my writing. However, it can be quite simple to forget about this in favour of what will help you the most - for example, you may be tempted to pick a more prominent, well-known organisation than a lesser-known one, even if you don't really take much notice of the area.
Since most organisations are dealing with some kind of discomfort (homelessness, misuse, environmental contamination, etc.) - and the more you wish to relieve this discomfort, the more your writing will be. Don't go in there and offer everything under the canopy! First test the water with only one task. I have my own volunteer show ranging from 0-3 hours/week, which is just right for me.
You have to handle it like a paying performance. It is the volunteer co-ordinator (or head of research and the person to whom you report) who bears the responsibility, and the money ends with her. If you are employed with your remunerated work, let your organisation know. I received an e-mail last weeks from my organization's head of engineering.
It' let her know she'd have to hold off a while before she offered me a new one. Sometimes volunteer work just doesn't work. Perhaps the organisation does not yet have a good voluntary system - or the type of tasks that the service offers simply does not suit your interests. So if you gave him a chance and it still doesn't work, fill out your latest job, send a courteous and proffesional note of retirement and look elsewhere.
Proactively log in when it takes a week and you have not received another order. If, for example, you are writing an item for the organization's website that focuses on certain customers, make sure that all publications are subscribed to and that you have a non-disclosure clause. Your volunteer co-ordinator can - and should - help you.
We wish you good fortune - and a lot of fun at work!
