It is only possible to place these procedures under the uniform prohibition of "publishing" in the meaning that they end with a printed version that is offered for purchase. They are in fact very different, both in what they ask of you, the writer, and in what they are offering in exchange. Keeping all this in the back of your minds, let's research the three major forms of publication - conventional publication, vanity and self-report.
Can you tell us about the tradition of publication? Traditionally, publication is when an editor, usually in collaboration with his agents, ensures publication under the auspices of an organisation that offers this professional services. To work through a publishers means to ensure the production of hard copy and that these hard copy will appear in the bookshops, all of which are maintained by the publisher's staff and contact persons.
Publishing houses also prepay for their work, provided that they get a percent of your earnings in the near term. You will be involved in all these choices, but you are only so far in the power to revoke your work. Also, publishers are very highly competition-intensive. You may need years to select even the most persistent writers for publication, if at all, and even more elapsed to actually bring your work to the opener.
If you are submitting your work to a publishers, the main way to understand conventional publication is to ask them to create a creative writing group whose aim is to get the public to understand your work. A lot of writers are struggling with this concept - their work begins as their babies, and it is difficult to believe that the final products will actually be a teamwork.
Publications take on those that they believe they want to be seen and that are worthwhile for them. When they think that a work needs far-reaching changes, they will hardly spend their own precious little extra hours when more complete work is on the way. The sale of hard copy comes from the work of publishing houses and bookshops to legitimise the book, and so a vanity-published writer will often have difficulty to sell the copy for which he has been paying.
A high cost means that it is not practical to buy a small number of specimens, but difficulties in the sale of the item mean that the purchase in large quantities often leaves the writer with a profit. While Vanity is rarely the right choice for writers, there are times when it can be advantageous. When a writer knows a channel or an established store that supports a small number of titles, he can earn cash with the deal.
A lot of traveling artists, be they entertainers, writers or writers, find that they can buy prints of their works at exhibitions or lectures. If you want to publish vanities, the main thing is to agree that any funds you invest in purchasing hard copy are more likely to be expended than they are. Writers are free to choose to make the best possible investment, but the production is very inexpensive and can be done for almost nothing.
The reader is not as trustful as with traditional works, and there is no means outside the writer to distinguish high-quality works from the flood of much impoverished works. If you want to publicize yourself, you have to consider that editing and designing your own books are really hard work and mistakes in these areas can often make the reader think that an otherwise outstanding publication should be in the lower end of the self-publishing sector.
They are easy to find but also expensive. It is also noteworthy that as the e-book is steadily expanding onto the open markets, it is still a much smaller proportion of the literature markets than bodily medium. Publish in a numerical form means to limit the number of persons who will come across your work, although this restricted number still represents a great reading opportunity.
After all, writers seeking self-publication must agree that it is their own liability to do so. That means network, the use of soft power to develop your own brands, participation in events such as books and interviewing, and submission to marketers. Self-editing ensures that your work is offered for sale, but your efforts and investment of your own resources are essential for your work.
Whilst vanity publications are usually reserved for those who are used for a certain number of hard copy, conventional and self-publications provide competitive advantages that can appeal contributors to one or the other as their prefer. A lot of auto-editors started out as self-publishers before getting the interest of a publishers, and many winning auto-editors followed a publishers for years before moving to the self-publishing business.
Since these objectives are shifting, make sure you rethink your choices and make sure that the kind of publication you are considering is the one that does the most for you. It is important to keep in mind that your publication's commercial viability does not depend on the path taken by the publisher, but rather on the amount of work you put into selling your books to your readership.
