You' re not sure where to go with these great short stories? In order to help you find out where you can submit short stories, we have compiled this guideline to 23 short story-publishers. As we give you a brief taste assessment of each journal and website, you will definitely want to invest some quality study of your targeted literature before familiarizing yourself with the type of piece you like.
Before you click on "Send", make sure that you do not make any of these errors! There are 23 points of sale that are publishing short stories. Camera Obscura is a biennial independant literature magazine that produces literature and photograph. Belles Lettres should be between 250 and 8,000 words, although their publishers have made exemptions for the sporadic "exception amendment" between 12,000 and 30,000 words. Pay: $1,000 to one author who will be included in each edition as specified by the editorial staff; all other authors will get two copy of the edition in which they will be included.
Crazyhorse is open to a multitude of fictions, from majorstream to avant-garde, and sets no limits to styles and forms. Also Crazyhorse accept non-fiction of any kind, incl. memoir, diary notes, obituary, etc. - we tell you that it is open for everything! The storyline magazine is, you guess it, all about the storyline, no matter what it looks like.
Every edition is themed, but its publishers are encouraging the authors to think outside the box when it comes to how to approach the subject - notions, non-fiction, hybrids, "hermit cancer essays" and more are under discussion. Do you like to keep your short stories very short? The Vestal Review releases no more than 500 words of lightning fun.
The publishers are open to all styles with the exception of syrup-like romanticism, tough sci-fi and children's stories, and they have a particular penchant for humour. 10 cent per words (for stories of up to 100 words); 5 cent per words (101-200 words); 3 cent per words (201-500 words). "Storys of great merit" in their assessment can get up to $25 lump sum.
Makes it possible to write slightly longer stories in between 500 and 1,000 words. We also accept under 1,000 words of text and non-fiction (up to 7,000 words) that explore and defy convictions and limits. A $3 charge is levied. Hand in something the editorial staff loves and you could get a good day's pay.
VQR is a versatile book containing both award-winning and aspiring authors and accepting short feature films (2,000 to 8,000 words), but is not a big fans of genres such as romanticism, sci-fi, etc... We also need non-fiction (3,500 to 9,000 words) such as reports on travels that explore the surrounding area. In general $1,000 and more for short feature films and walking pictures (about 25 Cent per word) with higher prices for detective coverage; $100 to $200 for contents released on-line.
Ploughshares' award-winning literature magazine is edited by Emerson College in Boston. Adopting literature and non-fiction under 6,000 words, they charge a $3 per submission on-line (it is free to submit by post, although they still favour dititit.). There is no need to use conventional sci-fi and Fantasy; Shimmer's writers are based on modern imagination and "speculative fiction" with powerful plot, character and emotive essence - the more singular, the better.
Hold your stories under 7,500 words (4,000 words are around the sweep spot). The Daily Sci-Fi is looking for character-based diction, and the short, the better. Whilst their number of words ranges from 100 to 1,500, they are particularly curious about a number of flashy stories (several flashy stories centred around a single theme), sci-fi, phantasy and slipstreams.
