In June 2009, a literary research in MEDLINE, EMBASE, CINAHL and the Index to Chiropractic Litererature was carried out using a mixture of checked words and cut-off text words to record papers that are pertinent to the compilation of scientific book review and are published in peer-reviewed periodicals.
After removing duplicate copies and applying eligibility criterions, a series of 78 papers were added to this review, among them narratives (n = 26), editorials or magazine notices ( (n = 25), initial research (n = 18) and magazine correspondences (n = 9). The reviewers now have a framework and a prospect to evaluate the book, once it has been based on the foreword, the introductory remarks and the index. One last comment on reviewing books is how to communicate your critic. Book review is an evaluating review. The reader is interested in the reviewer's opinion and a critic should not shy away from expressing it. However, the peer-revisers should be considerate of the writers and should compose professionally.
Critics of a book are not anonimous and the regulations of politeness and slander laws are valid. 25, 31, 32 Since book writers are often book reviewers, any unjustified review is likely to be heard by the bookwriter. 10, 18 hill 14 and Boring 47 suggest the use of narrative commentary, not inferences, to describe the issues that have been found in a book, so that the reader can come to his own inferences.
Every critique should be supported by an example or a corresponding explanatory statement of the reason for the critique in order to prevent disorientation about the argument of an expert. 10, 18, 33 The reviewers should, if possible, make proposals for improvements, as these may affect the design of a forthcoming issue. In the annexed book evaluation sheet the book reviewers should help to develop well-founded critique by making available a model for the documentation of samples to justify critique and for proposals for improvements in order to guarantee constructively commented.
The desired and unwanted properties of book reviewing are shown in Figure 2. Wishful and unwanted features of book review.
