The nine criterions for serious hybrid publishing from IPA
IBPA has published a 9-point sketch for hybrids with author-subsidized businesses to work seriously and keep industry high. Californian Independent Book Publishers Association (IBPA) has published a round of nine criterions for the serious running of a "hybrid publisher". "The intention is to set a boundary between "partner publishing" and Vanity publishing.
"As the new TBP materials say, hybrids publishing" should be a case in which "hybrids publishing in all aspects behaves like conventional publishing, except when it comes to the busines model". Yet the emergence of hybrids or publishing partners has affected the industry. "To this end, particular attention should be paid to point 8 of the IPPA, which deals with the question of how a sustainable hybrids publishing house should demonstrate its distribution strength.

One of the publishing houses is in charge of the production of textbooks that are processed, created and manufactured by professionals. These include hiring editorial staff for development-related editorial work, proof-reading and proof-reading as well as adherence to conventional guidelines for a professionally crafted book. Hybrids publishers are paying their writers more than the usual license spectrum for printed and electronic titles, in return for the author's own investments. Most of the time, the author's fee should be more than 50 per cent of the net price for printed and dit.
The 7th point, e.g. sales, is a particularly complicated topic because there are so many different things a hybrids business could do - while "sales" at vainty press doesn't mean more than that. This comment from the Author Guild is useful here, as it draws the interest of the approximately 9,000 members (some of whom publish their own) to the new IBPA guidelines:
"In recent years, the non-traditional publishing industry has expanded as more and more in-house publications and new types of publishing are being tested. "As the name suggests, hybrids publishing is somewhere between the two. Just like conventional publishing houses, hybrids also take on a gatekeeper role by curing and distributing publications and catalogs across all conventional flows of trad.
But, like self-publishing portals, they do not offer advance payments, and they usually charge higher licensing fees and exercise less leverage over publishing titles than they have. These new criteria, the Independant Book Publishing Association, are an interesting organisation that many people could use a little bit of explanation themselves. Whilst many might expect that "independent book publishers" will publish companies that publish author's works - and IBPA comprises many such companies - the group also has a considerable quota of individual writers in its mixture.
With the expansion of non-traditional publishing, this non-profit organisation has also extended to this line: "Are you an independant publishing house, self-publisher, a small or medium size publishing house, you are at the right address. Autorenverlag: 36.3 per cent. Individuals who publish only their own works, e.g. self-published writers and writers who work with hybrids.
Publishing partners: 5.4 per cent. Individuals or organisations offering publishing related goods or service. Prospective publisher: 2.8 per cent. Individuals - students or others - who want to post their own work or that of others. Prospective publishing houses are not allowed to participate in commissions, to cast votes or to participate in the executive committee.
Not categorised: 2 per cent. So the group is talking to both authors and editors in their new policy on hybrid publishing and other questions.
