It is a large, historic cathedral city in Berkshire, England, of which it is the district city. The reading is 110 km easterly of Bristol, 39 km southward of Oxford, 60 km westerly of London, 23 km northerly of Basingstoke, 19 km southwesterly of Maidenhead and 24 km easterly of Newbury.

Reading's first testimonies as a colony date back to the eighth millennium. An important trade and church center in the Middle Ages, it was the seat of the Reading Abbaye, one of the wealthiest abbeys in mediaeval England with powerful regal links, of which the twelfth centuries abbot and important remains have survived.

Until 1525 Reading was the biggest city in Berkshire, and fiscal declarations show that Reading was the tenth biggest city in England in terms of assets. It was seriously affected by the English Civil War, with a great besiege and a lack of commerce, and took a central part in the 1688 revolutionary, with the only significant armed operation of this revolutionary taking place on the city' s roads.

It was in the eighteenth and eighteenth centuries that a large ironworks began in the city and the development of the brewery business for which Reading was to become known. Throughout this time, the city quickly expanded as a production center. Reading is now a significant trading hub with information technologies and insurances activities and, despite its close location to London, has a net inflow of commuters.

Reading is also a large local retailing center that serves a large area of the Thames Valley and houses the University of Reading. The Reading Festival, one of England's largest annual musical events, is held here every year. Reading sports clubs are the Reading Football Club and the London Irish Rally Association and over 15,000 athletes run the Reading Half Marathon every year.

The 2011 Reading Metropolitan Area Survey showed an estimate of 318,014 inhabitants, making it one of the UK's biggest cities without municipal stature. Reading municipality has 163,100 inhabitants (mid-2017 est.). Located in the Berkshire earldom for ceremony ceremonies, the district has been a district seat since 1867, previously shared with Abingdon-on-Thames.

The reading may date back to the time of the Romans in Britain, possibly as a commercial harbour for the Calleva Atrebatum. The first clear proofs of Reading as a colony, however, date back to the eighth centuries, when the city became known as Readingum. Its name probably comes from the Readingas, an Anglo-Saxon clan whose name means Readas people in Old English, or less probably the Celtic Rhydd-Inge, which means Ford over the river.

At the end of 870 an Danish Army marched into the Wessex Empire and established a encampment in Reading. King Ethelred and his brothers Alfred the Great tried without success to break through the Danish defence in the first Reading battles on 4 January 871. It is described in the Anglo-Saxon Chronicle, and this report contains the oldest known documentary recording of the existance of reading.

Danes stayed in Reading until the end of 871, when they withdrew to their London shelter. Following the Battle of Hastings and the Norman occupation of England, William the Conqueror gave country in and around Reading to his founding of the Battle Abbey. The city was expressly described as a city in its 1086 Domesday Book list.

The Readingabbey was founded in 1121 by Henry I, who is interred on the site of the cloister. Part of his foundations, he gave the monastery his country in Reading, along with the country in Cholsey. Unknown how much Reading was affected by the Black Death that blew through England in the fourteenth centuries, it is known that the Reading Abbey abbey's chief Henry of Appleford was one of their casualties in 1361 and that Henley near London suffered 60% of his people.

In the meantime, Reading City Council has adopted policies that prioritize in Reading community transport to the disadvantage of throughput. Reading is 60 km westward of London, 39 km southeast of Oxford, 110 km eastward of Bristol and 80 km northerly of the British southern coastline.

Reading's center lies on a low crest between the Thames and Kennet, near their tributary, which reflects the city's story as a riverside harbour. According to the definitions, neither the city nor the metropolitan area are necessarily connected to the district. The city of Reading was smaller than the district from a historical point of view.

Among the old church communities are the St. Mary, St. Laurence and St. Giles church communities or the even smaller 19th centuries district. Today Reading encompasses a number of boroughs and other parts of the city in addition to the city center, both within the district itself and in the area.

Reading, sometimes called Greater Reading, encompasses the city' s east and west outskirts, in the Earley, Woodley, Purley and Tilehurst communities. In 2011, this area had 218,705 inhabitants, with the ONS recognizing this defined (USD) as a city of Reading.

65 ] The city of Reading (officially Reading/Wokingham) also comprises Winnersh, Wokingham and Crowthorne with a total of about 320,000 people. Reading, like the UK, has a marine environment with restricted seasonality and generally modest precipitation throughout the year. Reading University's atmosphere observatory on the Whiteknights campus, which has been carrying out atmosphere surveys and observational meteorology since 1970.

The " city " Reading is probably the ONS's municipal division, which had 218,705 inhabitants in 2011. This is an informal term covering the whole of Reading County and adjacent suburban areas in Wokingham and West Berkshire Counties such as Earley and Tilehurst. Also, the US dollar is a division of the Reading-Wokingham metropolitan area and covers only areas generally called part of the city and rules out areas such as Wokingham and Woodley that have largely different identity.

The large enterprises Microsoft, Oracle[80] and Hibu (formerly Yell Group)[81] have their head office in Reading. Prudential has an administrative center in the city. The Reading Group has a significant historic participation in the information technologies sector, mainly due to the early existence of International Computers Limited[84] and Digital Equipment Corporation locations in the city.

Further technological firms with a significant urban footprint are Access IS, Agilent Technologies,[86]Cisco,[87]Ericsson,[88]Symantec,[87]Verizon Business,[89] and Commvault. 90 ] These businesses are located around Reading or just outside the city limits, some in industrial areas such as Thames Valley Park in Earley, Green Park Busi ness Park and Arlington Busi ness Park.

Reading organises the reading festival every year, which has taken place since 1971. Reading was also known for its WOMAD Festival for about twenty years until 2006, when it relocated to Charlton Park in Malmesbury, Wiltshire. The Reading Beer Festival was first staged in 1994[106] and has since become one of the biggest brewing festival in the UK.

107 ] Reading Pride is also an plantation LGBTA celebration at Kings Meadow all gathering. For several years Mary Russell Mitford was living in Reading and then spending the remainder of her live outside the city at Three Mile Cross and Swallowfield. 119 ] The fictitious Belford Regis of her novel of the same name,[120] first released in 1835, is largely predicated on Reading.

Topographically described with precision, it is still possible to trace the progress of the novel figures in today's reading. The reading also occurs in the works of Thomas Hardy, where it bears the name "Aldbrickham". The Big Over Easy and The Fourth Bear, Jasperfordes fiction from the Department of Child Crime, are also located in Reading, Berkshire.

BBC Two comedy Beautiful People, basing on the memories of Simon Doonan, takes place in Reading in the 90s. Forbury Gardens' Lion May Wall, an informal reading icon, recalls the 328 Royal Berkshire Regiment officials who perished in the Battle of Maiwand in 1880.

There are two listening radios in Reading: The Reading has a locally based TV channel, That's Thames Valley, which transmits locally throughout the Greater Reading Area. 0118 is the area prefix for landline phones in Reading. Boutique Telecom offers a nationwide landline service throughout the city and an affordable high-speed high-speed DSL network in most areas.

Part of the reading is wirelessly transmitted by Virgin Media and provides wired TV, phone and wideband wireless connectivity. Reading's position in the Thames Valley just to the west of London has made it an important part of the country's transportation system. They had two airports in or near Reading, one in Coley Park[159] and one in Woodley[160], but they both shut down.

RailAir connects Reading with Heathrow, or the area can be reached by air by taking the Paddington trains and connecting at Hayes and Harlington stations to Heathrow Connect. Reading's top international schools for foreign languages are Gateway Languages, the British Languages Centre, ELC London Street and Eurospeak School.

The Cathedral or Cathedral Church of St. Mary the Virgin, as it is better known, is Reading's oldest church donation, known to have been established in the ninth and possibly sooner centuries. Although the importance of the later abbey has receded into the background, the Reading Minster has gained importance again since the abbey was destroyed.

Founded in 1966, Reading Town FC,[211] plays in Scours Lane and the Hellenic Premier Division, but was disbanded in 2016, while the other non-league Reading City FC now plays in Scours Lane, having moved from Palmer Park Stadium at the end of the 2015-16 campaign.

The Reading is a center for local football club in the region, with the Aviva Premiership London Irish tenant at Madejski Stadium. The Reading club is also home to three other semi-professional football clubs: R.F.C. Abbey reading, R.F.C. Redinger reading and R.F.C... reading. Reading Rockets is the city's top workout sports group.

It is home to the Australia Rules Reading Kangaroos and Berkshire Renegades teams. Used by the Reading Athletic Club[212] and the Berkshire Renegades for workouts. 213 ] The Reading Hockey Clubs is playing in the Men's Premier Division and in the Women's Division One of the English Hockey League. Reading Rockets baseball league is playing in the English League.

The Reading Racing Club and the Reading University Boat Club,[214] both next to the Caversham Bridge, operate paddling, while the Blue Coat School in Sonning operates next to the Redgrave Pinsent Racing Lake in Caversham, which provides National Squad UK coaching facility. Reading Town's yearly regatta is held near Thames Valley Park,[216] with the Reading Amateur Regatta in June, usually two week before the Henley Royal Regatta.
