Nowadays, when you choose to make your own publications, you no longer have to spend the high upfront charges that used to be the trademark of self-publishing. Self-publication of your book does not mean that you cannot contact a publishers at a later date if you have some of your book sold and'product proof' behind you - in fact, this is a way many people use.

Traditionally, a publishing house has the contact, knowledge and professionalism to do much of the work associated with publishing your book on a large scale. I' ve written and released a book named Atomic Design myself and I'm very happy with how it all turned out. First and foremost, I would like to pass on my experiences because I believe that the trial has much to give other writers who are considering self-publishing their own work. I' ll explain why I made the book the way I made it.

Well, why not about a publishing company? I' ve never done a book before, so it seems stupid not to work with a publishers who could give instructions, structures and ressources. I' ve been a blogger for almost a ten years and even added a section to a book. I had a feeling for what goes into the creation of a book, but I certainly didn't have the whole image.

I' ve had several editors write me a book for them, and while I was fascinated by what they had to say, I was also a little sceptical. Many of my mates wrote for publishing houses, and they were burnt in different ways: they did not get a fair profit-sharing ( "Some had a 90-10 splits in favour of the publishing house! Yowzer.

They were at the delineation of the company's release plan, they were limited in what they could or couldn't type, they were compelled to use certain (bulky) instruments, they couldn't announce the book or speak about it before it was finished, they had a lot of guys on their backs to do it, they clashed minds with the editing style, they couldn't keep track of their own artistic tendencies and so on.

I' m not here to denigrate book publishing. I' ve seriously thought about signing for a certain publishing house and found the agreement to be a good one for everyone, but there was a big one. The people were dissatisfied with the notion that I write the book outdoors and share all the manuscripts and the processes as they were made.

In the year before I started writing Atomic Design, I was working on a project with some guys who decided against dividing things before we were "done". I am a strong supporter of public creativity, so I firmly believe that the creation of the tool would help us to become known, stir up enthusiasm, inspire responsibility and inspire drive.

Unfortunately, the item broke up for several reason and I had to put a year's work in the bin without showing anything. Unnecessarily to say that I didn't want to imitate this book experiment. For me, the idea of hiding for over a year and then coming down from the hill like Moses with a ready-made piece ("See!") was completely unattractive.

It was my idea that it would be both creative and worthwhile to write the book outdoors. From my point of view, the benefits of being able to write a book outdoors are many: If I were to leave myself to myself, I would be tempted to launch a book projects, be disheartened or diverted and postpone the work.

When I know that a lot of folks - especially paid benefactors - expect a done piece, then I better jump over to him and get the goddamn thing done. Film at Smashing Conf in Germany a few years ago and found out that they had written over 200 blogs during their projects.

So when the final item was offered for sale, they had a (virtual) line outside the front doors that gave them cash. If you are fortunate, check this out against a conventional rollout that the device can advertise just a few months or more prior to market introduction. It' a long term sponsorship - it's usually unpleasant for an writer to announce a new book.

The years of bleeding, sweating and tearing go into making the commodity, but if the writer twitters over the book over a fistful of time, or sponsors it for more than a week or so, the writer runs the risk of becoming this arsehole who is "constantly hawking" their goods. "I try to capture myself when I think unconsciously: "I get it, you've written a book" while browsing through my tweeteed.

Composing the book outdoors relieves this issue, at least during its creation. The following folks had new (and hopefully rewarding) things to study, and I was able to advertise the scheme over a longer period of timeframe in a way that didn't seem too free or rough.

This allows the writer to easily publish their contents with anyone - My book is available to view all of it for free on-line, which means that those who cannot buy the book can still view the contents, and prospective clients can view the contents before making a purchase choice.

Authors can share their thoughts and thoughts with as many individuals as possible (isn't that a big part of why humans are writing books?), while at the same time giving the humans a means to fund the project. While it is possible to read a book on-line, it is not exactly an excellent way to read in long formats.

Paperbacks and e-books often offer much better results. This is how the combo works: free of charge for range and free of charge on-line and payed pocketbook & e-book for reading-experiences. When I share the whole script on-line, I can lead them to a specific headline or section in the text of the book. You just buy my book, turn to page 142, and it's in the second heel.

If I write another blogs item or discuss the subject with others on-line, then I can create a hyperlink to the paragraph. They like to quarrel with me about the concepts "atoms", "molecules" and "organisms", for example, so that I like to associate them with my thoughts in the book about the choice of the right one.

This allows crowdsourceced editing - I awoke up one mornings to a series of jerk queries about my design of Atomic Design. This was all while I was still at it! Eventually, I worked with a good faith journalist (more on this shortly), but the encouragement of the reader to file editions contributed to a better end result.

Several of these benefits were already evident on the first day of the work, but many others only became evident during the development of the work. Here is how I imagined the bookstore-- Call the folks if I make any significant changes. Let a person reread the work-in-progress text in its totality, and give a way for a person to pre-order the possible e-book for $10.

I use IA Writer for many of my texts and have always relished the conscious limitations that compel me to concentrate on the text. The Jekyll - Jekyll is a statistical site builder primarily used for publishing sites that do not need tons of manipulations of information. I used Shopify to pre-order the eBooks and still use the services to buy and share the pocket book, eBooks and combos.

I have created a MailChimp email to inform those who have pre-ordered the book and/or are interested in the book about the progres. I have also created a subscription page where you can sign up for the latest news about the game. This is the infra-structure with which I declared the site on January 8, 2015.

From the first response, it seemed that they were ready to make this unorthodox trip with me. In the space of a fortnight, and without actually posting a text, I created over 400 e-book pre-orders, which certainly contributed to confirming my suspicion that this book was well-written. And now came the difficult part: to write the bloody book.

I' ve been told of writers who follow many different ways of approaching the author. Other people handle it like a customer liaison by setting aside a certain number of lessons each working on the content. Other people crowd into paperwork at night and on the weekend. As much of my spare minute as possible was devoted to typing, I blocked my timetable and cranked up parts of aircraft chapter.

I had to be disciplined (I'm certainly not a dawn man), but it was those few early lessons in the early mornings that finally made the completed script a real thing. Most difficult about this particular writing experience was to manage people's aspirations. Usually when writers announce a book design idea, it can be expected that they will have a final book in a few week or two.

One or two (or three or four) years of the author's tedious bookwork are usually concealed from the reader. There were so many who expected me to publish the whole book in a few brief heats. Although I shared all my advances on-line and sent newsletters about the book's development, I still couldn't understand why the book they had already bought for wasn't ready.

I' ve even had a fistful of folks asking for a reimbursement because they were frustrated by my failure to get the book finished on time. I didn't know what I was going to do about the book when I began to write it. I also knew it would be a good thing to point someone else's eye at the text to make sure I didn't seem like a total dumb.

Other webdesigners who used Owen as an author for their own book recommend him. I asked him to make the editorial work visible to everyone. I' m excited that he autographed the whole thing.

While I was working on the last few sections of the book, Owen went through and worked on the sections I thought were sufficiently far. Any time Owen would close a section, I would go through these changes and put them into practice (what you can see here). This was a seamless operation, and we finally completed two thorough text edit sessions and a few smaller optimizations to get to the definitive text.

So when I began the book I wanted to do all the work myself. So I was going to cause the e-book (which is basically a bunch of HTML, CSV and agent ) and sketch the lay-out of the pocket book (I used to do some printing designs at my first work so I know my way around InDesign a bit).

Whilst everything itself was a nice theoretical concept, there just wasn't enough daytime to take it all on me and get the book out of the house in a sensible amount of fucking minutes. It became clear to me that I needed expert help to finish the book. A number of guys came forward, and I was horrified to see that one of them was Rachel Andrew.

It was astonishing that she was willing to help me with the whole thing, despite her full time. Fortunately, because the book script was originally composed in Marcdown, the translation into e-book format did not seem to be a big step forward. She has her own transcription conversion processes because she has her own set of writing work.

As we tried to get the book out of the front doors, I never learnt the unique way Rachel converted the e-book-format. I knew that I could contact my super-talented girlfriend Rachel Arnold Sager for the pocket book. Fortunately, she took on the job of putting the texts and pictures - which only came in Markdown and HTML - into an upright pocket.

They used InDesign for the book and turned it around within a few workdays. We' ve been playing with the font sizes to get the right book thicknesses and page numbers. Evidently I was a little jumpy about the production of a real book, as all sorts of mistakes would forever be rooted in a real physics file with no options on Cmd+Z ( "sacred cigarettes I like the web").

Luckily, because Rachel turned the printing over so quickly, we were able to send the Adlerauge Owen a PDF previews to make sure there were no copy errors. After we made sure that Owen's optimizations were discussed, the book was time for printing. Besides the printing designs, Rachel was helping me find a paperback productionist.

This book is of great qualitiy. And I wanted to send labels with every order of paperbacks. So, Rachel help me convert the nuclear symbol and the nuclear icons into sticker-friendly sizes that we sent to the great Commonwealth Press people who were printing a heap.

Printer designs have been optimized and checked to make sure there were no copy mistakes. This means that after month and month of efforts it was at last the right moment to announce the final work. I' ve quickly added the pocketbook, e-book and combos to my Shopify-Shop. Thank-you to those who helped the site by pre-ordering the e-book, I gave them a rebate key to buy the pocket book for 50% off (which is just above cost).

From the roofs (err, newsletters and social media) I called out that Atomic Design was all there was and available for purchas. Weren't they still interested in the book? It turned out that it seemed that they were more enthusiastic about a finished item than about the promises of a finished one.

As I ordered the first 1,000 pieces from the print shop, I imagined that I would be seated on a cardboard box seat for the time being. I was completely devastated when almost 1,000 pocketbacks were ordered in the two week period between the final book being announced and being mailed.

I' ve chosen to hand out the book myself. Although some folks told me I was mad about taking on the boredom of sharing the book myself, I felt it was important to keep a strong bond with the folks who were supporting the scheme, and also to complete the whole group of self-editors.

Recruiting nearly 1,000 copies to send, I enlisted my father, my woman, our girlfriend Kelly and my brothers to handle all orders. 25. 25 "x12" buffer mailer - I bought urine buffer mailer, but found out that their chief executive was writing a pile of despicable policy messages on their corporate website, so I was experimenting with a few other mail-order firms.

Nearly a year after I sent out my book, I still relish the habit of delivering Atomic Design off. It' great to see to which country the book is sent (Faroe Islands! Malta! Iran!), and I really like to connect with the great folks who are supporting the book. I am excited about the outcome of the whole operation.

Obviously, it was difficult to write the book and there were many hurdles, but the end result, the processes, the people and the response far surpassed all my expectation. One of the things that I like is to hear from those who have said that my book has been helping them selling and creating a book designing system at theirs.

From a distribution point of view, my big wager to write the book outdoors really did pay off. First announcements have inspired and inspired audiences about the site, and a number of individuals have pre-ordered the e-book. When I introduced the book, I told them that the end result was that some folks ordered the book.

Historical publishing house patterns show the writers a first surge of orders and then an unavoidable long cock of bookselling. These first announcements and the constant dripping of pre-orders provided enough funds to cover the entire cost of the book's output and completely eliminate the pecuniary risks of the book. It feels like this whole thing has helped me cash in my crisps on a grand scale.

During the years before this book was written, I contributed to over 600 blogs, worked on open code pojects, assisted in the creation of resources and worked with some amazing guys on some side work. The right place, the right place at the right place at the right time has been available in various shapes for a long while.

However, the concept of modules, sample library, designer system, styles, etc. became very much appreciated at the moment I was writing the book, so I was very happy with my timing. What did I do? I am totally on the backs of giant and I am grateful to all those who have opened the way for this way of thought to become majorstream.

Take your pie and enjoy it - many are sceptical about the notion of" giving away your gift". Hopefully, by detailed this procedure, I can show that it is possible to work outdoors and divide your work while at the same time create a products that will make money for them.

Since I took the pre-orders directly from the door, the whole thing was lucrative from day one. This means that I was able to afford editing, artwork development, e-book converting and overhead. Making a pile of cash out of the scheme was never a big target of mine, but it was indeed a big target not to loose a pile of cash for the work.

These pre-orders have lessened a great deal of fears about the work. Cost recovery means space - By meeting the cost and managing the whole operation, I was able to channel some of the book's gains into rewarding efforts such as emergency response and other causes. It is a curious but marvelous sensation to help with a few words about webstyling.

Humans get angry when they part with their funds and don't see immediate results. Fortunately, Kickstarter and its kind reset people's aspirations and make them feel at ease with retarded satisfaction, but it is definitely a daunting task to make their loved ones happier. The distribution of the book itself involves a great deal of work - current work such as the packing of the book and the way to the mail is a small workload.

In the end, I don't care because I sense a link to the folks who are supporting the book, but I can see why many folks would get out of the game. Self-publication of a book is achievable and can be very worthwhile. It' s an astonishing sense to conceive a concept, to do the tough work and to carry it through to the end.

Building a book - I have the strong feeling that the book is based on a climax of all my other (often unpaid) work. Is it possible for other persons to take over this letter and use it in their own work? I won't say it's the best option for anyone considering a book, but I think it makes good business for those who have developed some good will in their area, who want complete command of their work and who are willing to immerse themselves in areas of the publishing supply chain that are usually worked on by conventional publishing houses.
