There is more to Microsoft Word than just characters and text. Immerse yourself in the design and lay-out utilities and you'll be amazed at how much it can help even newcomers to create eye-catching booklet, flyer and newsletter designs. As your content and design become more sophisticated, you need the help of a design expert - and perhaps a high-end desktops publication master.

Before you do that, give Word's built-in design talent a try. Using a document model is the simplest way to build more complex Word document. Word has literally got a hundred of them, from newsletter and flyer to visiting card and fax. You can start by going to File > New in the menu area on the lefthand side, which displays a choice of common themes (including the empty page by default) that the Find pane overlooks.

Even if you want to modify design items (such as fonts), you can begin with a pattern to apply default borders and other fundamental design settings that would interfere with the creation from-the-ground. When you choose to begin over on a empty page, you can specify page sizes, borders, columns, or any other fundamental preferences in the page ribbon.

Alternatively, click the Design page and select a topic - a set of typefaces for common layouts such as title, subtitle, and simple text. Of course, you can customize them at work, but the typefaces in a topic are selected and dimensioned according to generally recognized design guidelines to make them look good together.

On the Design page, you can also find a collection of themes and themes that you can create to enhance your look. For example, you can pick a colour from a pallet for a frame and another for subtitles. When you have selected a topic, the colours appear in the range when you click the Font colour symbol on the Home toolbar.

If you want to try different looks, move your mouse over a topic (or other design item in the ribbon) and it will be used in the corresponding area of your work. Click on the required item to make the changes persistent. A further on the Design page allows you to add a wallpaper colour, sample or even an illustration to your work.

You can click on page color to see these choices - they are a nice replacement to the common simple whiteness. There is nothing more dull than a page full of clear text, but sometimes you don't have many pictures to alleviate the monotonous. Some of the more interesting layout making features that you can use in Word are dropping cap, subhead and pull quotes - and it's relatively simple to use.

On the Insert toolbar, just click the Add Cap button in the text tool. The pull quota is a quote from the text that you copy into a User Language User Language User Language User Language User Language Box and use as a design item, just as you would use an art. Place the pointer in Word in the general area where you want to place a text field and click the text field symbol in the Insertibbon. If you select one, it will appear with text in your file. Then you can substitute the text and customize text sizes and colors.

On the right side of the User Box you can set how the User Box will fit into the format. Or you can set the location of the User Box on the page or bind it to the copy around it so that when the copy is moving, the UserBox also moves.

Use the Word Art symbol on the Insert Ribbon to use colourful typefaces with decorations and special effect that you won't find in default type. They can use these signs to enliven a page, but you should not go overboard: Meanwhile, you may have realized that text editors only occupy a small area on the insert tape, as there are so many other elements you can include to enhance the look and feel of a work.

The latest Word releases contain utilities that allow you to easily edit pictures from within the application. Like the text field, place the pointer in the area where you want the picture to appear. Then, click Pictures (or Online Pictures if you want to search for pictures in Office's large set of clipart images) and click the picture you want to paste.

Though not exactly where you want it to appear in your documents, the picture will appear so near enough that you can simply move it to the desired location. It is also possible to make finer settings using the arrows when the picture is in motion picture display only. Simultaneously, the multi-function bar appears with everything from cutting to art and framing possibilities.

Like the text fields, you will see an symbol next to the picture that allows you to choose how it will fit into the text. MorphoSys Word also has specialized shape insertion utilities (for basic diagrams), SmartArt (for more complex trade diagrams), and even Excel-like graphs that you can generate on the fly. Note that the latest graphical item in the Paste tab is the screen shot icon: You can click it and paste any desired screen shot on your Windows screen - a useful utility for those who want to demonstrate computer workflows. To have subtitles that are not unnumbered, either add a text field below (or next to) the picture for subtitles only or insert them into a field to link them together, another complex process. Most of the Word utilities can be used directly, so if you don't like the way something looks, you can modify it slightly.

You can, for example, include text in a column by marking everything and choosing the desired number of column on the Page Layout page. When you have added multiple items to a page and they do not behave as desired, see Help in the Arrange section on the Page Layout page.

The majority of small business print shops accepts PDF files, and Word lets you store your document as a PDF file. However, there are different kinds of PDF, so you should ask a computer to print them and see if they can work with the PDF file created by the Word document you are using.

Word cannot do everything a high-end top of the range publisher can. If you need cut-prints on pages, for example, Microsoft recommends that you save your Word documents to Publisher, the Office Office publishing application. Whilst Word makes it simple to make pages with header and footer lines, it is not so simple to confuse them with other page formats in the same work.
