Even though online dissemination (also known as online or web publication in the shape of a website) is strongly linked to online publication today, there are many non-network capable online releases such as CD and CD encyclopaedias and peer-reviewed and referenced editions that people on the move and others rely on without fast, dependable networking on.
ePublishing is also used in the area of test prep for training purposes in both advanced and emerging countries (and thus partially replaces traditional books) - because it allows the combination of contents and analysis - for the advantage of users. ePublishers are able to react quickly to changes in the demands of the markets, as they do not have to order and have them deliver paperback. ePublishing also provides a broader selection of titles, some of which would not be available to clients due to the lack of interest in a conventional "print run" in the bookshops.
ePublication allows new writers to publish titles that would be unprofitable for conventional editors. Whereas in the 2010s the concept of "electronic publishing" was mainly used for online and web-based publications, in the past the concept described the evolution of new ways of producing, distributing and interacting with users with a view to the computer-based creation of text and other interacting mediums.
There are two differences between the e-publication processes and conventional paper-based publishing: 1 ) the use of an off-set printer for end production and 2 ) the avoidance of the dispersion of a natural material (e.g. hard copy book, magazine or newspaper).
Since the contents are electronically, it can be disseminated via the web and via online bookshops, and the user can view the materials on a variety of electronics and digitally supported equipment, which includes desktops, notebooks, tablet PCs, smart phones or e-reader trays. Consumers can view the contents they publish online on a website, in an app on a tabular PC or in a PDF file on a computer.
Some readers can use an inkjet or toner cartridge printing machine or a print-on-demand system to produce the contents on hardcopy. A number of people are downloading to their equipment so that they can still view it even if their equipment is not online (e.g. during a plane flight).
Electronic distribution of contents as electronic application packages ("apps") has become increasingly common among consumers in the 2010s due to the fast acceptance of smart phones and tables. Initially, it took natively built Web services for any wireless platforms to appeal to all target groups, but in an attempt to achieve general purpose equipment connectivity, the focus was on using HTML5 to build Web services that could run on any web browsers and on many machines.

Typographers and creative professionals who create the print settings for printed booklets have traditionally had to change their role because text markups (e.g. Hyper Text Mark-up Language or another marking language) are often required for developing online provision methodologies.
Digital publishers must have a thorough understanding of markup language, the diversity of readers and computer equipment available, and the way users can browse, review or interact with the work. In the 2010s, however, new easy-to-use publishing tools will be available that allow publishers to create and distribute contents in this release without in-depth coding skills such as Adobe Systems' Digital Publishing Suite and Apple's iBooks Author.

It is statistically proven that online publication allows for greater dissemination, because when a magazine is available online, a greater number of scholars can use it. And even if a female lecturer works at a college that does not have a particular periodical in her own collection, she can still consult the periodical online.
Several periodicals, while maintaining their long term review processes to make sure that the research is done correctly, have migrated either fully developed editions or even to full online publish. During the early 2000s, many of the current copyrights legislation was drafted around print products, periodicals and papers. ePublishing poses new issues regarding copyrights, because when an e-book or e-journal is available online, it allows billions of web surfers to see a copy of the documents electronically without "making copies".
New findings suggest that e-publishing can be more collaboration-oriented than conventional paper-based publication; e-publishing often affects more than one writer, and the resulting works are more easily accessed as they are posted online. Simultaneously, the accessibility of online materials opens more opportunities for counterfeiting, unauthorised use or re-use of the work.
