It was a very useful work for me at a very important time in my work. There''s nothing to be done incorrectly if you have advices from C. Michael Curtis (fiction editor of America's most famous publication) and Frank Conroy (chairman of America's most renowned literary institute), not to speak of having the greatest surviving author of shorts, Tobias Wolff, who writes the striker.

In addition, there are some very useful workshops from a Tom Bailey (just a headwriting teacher at Harvard) and some very hearty hints from a real champion like Dubus..... There are some really great tales! One of the things that really sets this script apart are the brief histories that make up the second half.

I would have had a better understanding of the style of some of my essay, I would have reread them first and then the essay, but it wasn't a problemat. It' s just the shorts are amazing. In the second issue (I think or whatever the newest one is) there is a particularly large selection of tales, from Maupassant to Hemingway to Junot Diaz. They do a great work by deciphering the story components to show what makes them work so well and using the story to illuminate a point.

There is a great variety in the styles of the writers presented, and the essay shows the strength of each author. Several of the articles also contain tutorials. Not really writing down responses to all (or even most) of them, but it was very useful to think them through. The first part of the volume gives you a proper recap of the character, story, attitudes and timing, as well as visual metaphors and voices.

There' s also an effort to delineate the brief history, a section about the artisan as a craftman, about craftwork, workshop, the custom of typing and why to even type, along with some publisher information; none of this is very inspiring for the beginner or the normal author. However, the shorts that have been selected for the second part of the volume are inspired, so it is definitely a good idea to buy the volume only for them.

Although you can probably find them somewhere less expensive than in this one. It was really useful in relation to characters, movement, POV, editing, how to use other authors for teaching, etc. The most useful thing is to discuss the differences between a novel and a brief one. I' m working on the narrative shape now and the differentiation (even if it can sometimes be blurry) has help me to consolidate in my head what I did when I wrote a *story*!

Big tales collected here, although they could probably all be found in most contemporary shortfiction-antheology. It' the papers that are most valuable here. On the whole I liked the use of genuine shorts in the script, and the essay on typing was useful: even for this 20 year old author.

This is a really great work for anyone who writes shorts. Combining essay writings with well-written storytelling, Bailey gives us a great deal to study and marvel at. Astonishing volume with articles on what a handicraft is, articles on crafts, samples of the best novels for adults and a listing of places that are publishing them.

It' a very good book.
