Coming in an article for Writer's Digest, Orson Scott Card details four story structure types according to the plot details authors structure stories around. You can use simple, reliable tools to create a sketch of your novel, and then slowly fill in the detail either as you walk or (if you prefer) in advance. However, the trick is to sort the most basic structure of your action as a first step. It is probably the most popular plot in all creative writing genres. However, this storyline will not work for any old books. Media Res is best reserved for action-packed fiction such as thriller, mystery and scare. Don't mistake In Media Res for just opening the first section with actions. Specifically, in Media Res means that the novel begins in the center of the narrative, usually in the second or third crises, albeit sometimes between actions.

There is still an upwards trend with continuous exposure, but the beginning of the narrative is often narrated through flashback or conversation. In the aftermath of several other emergencies, the hero faces the culminating act, which is followed by the fall and dissolution.
