Key for authoring a sketch of a non-fiction book
The second in a row about the basics of self-publishing your book, this article deals with the tacky issue of non-fiction overviews. Some businessmen have the inherent capacity to use the same logical and free thought that is used in their businesses when they are sitting down with a computer and constructing their book.
Of course, all our projects have a sound infrastructure and a sound basis. Penmanship seems easy. However, the vast majority of us need some directives, and that is where a draft comes into play. Drawing on my expertise in working with businesswriters, there are three fundamental stages to creating a sound, practical design that will guide you through the entire process.
Keep in mind that you are the commercial specialist in your area - perhaps the name of your enterprise at the centre is a good starting point. Write down all the thoughts you have around the edges. When you are sure that you have gathered all the important information, you can begin prioritising.
What do I need in my book? Is some of the idea too simple or too progressive? Can you see subjects that are similar enough to be dealt with in the same section? Now begin to delete them. This may be enough for some authors to keep them informed, but for others this tutorial introduces them directly into a summary of chapters.
The next thing you need to do is to turn your mind map into a chapter-by-chapter structure: this could very well be the fundamental index for your book. Perhaps you would like to begin with an "introduction" and end with a "conclusion" (if you can also call it something else). You will have sections in between.
When you realize that you have many sections, I think that's OK - there's no rules about how few or how many you can have. You will want to reorder your sections as a single page so you can reorder them simply. Of course, you will want to put the more fundamental materials at the beginning of your book, and progressively work through to more sophisticated work.
When you write a non-fiction book, it gets a little fiddly. If so, you need to think about the story sheet or how the book extends from introductory to final. Having certain sections may work, but it's best to begin the write cycle with a narration and keep this upright.
It is a good notion to take a few minutes for each of the chapters in the plan. It is up to you how you do this, so make a note of any sub-items or headings you wish to discuss in each of them. Sometimes you will find that a section requires a great deal of research: if so, you can easily modify the size of your book and crop this section, or you may want to keep it, but allow additional write credit.
You should not bother to add or delete sections while making headway in either case. Some talented authors, as I said at the beginning, have the talent to develop the work in a simple, easy and beautiful way. However, the overwhelming bulk of us have to work, rework and rework! the stuff until it really feel right.
