Lulu.com manufactures textbooks in both paper and electronic format. Hardcovers and paperbacks are available in a variety of different paperback, cover and sizing. Publish, Buy and Sell are the key word tags that clearly define what Lulu is all about for writers. In the print and publish industry, Lulu is not entirely new. Createspace and Blurb, the US-based publishers of digital media, also provide free and affordable books.
It is the brute behind the front doorstep, however, that puts Lulu ahead of the pack, although I have some misgivings that the focus is shifting to more mandatory self-publication bundles rather than off-the-shelf retail offerings. It' s worth remembering that Lulu, like most authoring solutions providers, does not do the printing in-house.
Until 2008, this was almost entirely awarded to Lightsning Sources, a worldwide letterpress and fulfillment services provider. Lulu's most powerful capability is its on-line design/converter tool, where writers can submit their books and within a matter of seconds - whether it's an MS Word or an entire print-ready PDF- a potentially professionally produced premium grade product that can compete with any major business publisher.
I' d like to have added a second powerful capability, the Lulu Chat & Help function - an excellent tool for new writers who aren't familiar with bookshelves - but Lulu did without it when they made some recessive cutbacks like many publishers in 2008. I strongly suggest (before dealing with the Lulu Beast) that prospective visitors should fully and in detail review the FAQ pages, as there is a significant amount of information there that will prevent many subsequent issues and frustration.
I' ve browsed Lulu's on-line forum and found many people who obviously haven't seen these help pages, and I've just dipped them in at the water and struggled to domesticate them without the right tool. Writers must first sign up with Lulu, which will take a few moments, and then they can sign in to their own "My Lulu" page and start creating a booksheet.
Lulu authoring tools allow you to upload PDF or doc file formats to the PDF convertor, create a master artwork, upload your own artwork, or use the Lulu Picture Gallery for the artwork covers. Once a work is completed, the writers fill out information about their work, such as a briefing for their front stores in Lulu's own on-line bookshop, and select prices and profit margin.
Lulu also provides the ability to make paperbacks, booklets and diaries. Based on my own experience with the Lulu website and the publication of two volumes, I strongly suggest that you download the Mozilla Firefox web browsers (available free of charge). This type of on-line designing tool can sometimes make MS IE a bit instable, although I haven't encountered any issues since the launch of an upgraded Lulu in 2009.
It seems there is a broad perspective on Lulu and other web communities, not least through their own people and the site's help pages, that writers should have a PDF of their books interiors to download into Lulu Konverter. While PDF is a state of the art printing format in the publishers' environment, Lulus Konverter likes to do it from a Microsoft Word document.
This means as long as you have taken care to properly reformat your Word document, with particular care being taken to adjust the page sizes, page borders, header and footer lines, page break, page numbers, and section feed. Lulu Conversion authenticates and replicates your pages exactly as you specify.
Although I have no previous knowledge, I would suggest that if you have an artwork textbook, an illustration volume, a table of detailled charts and charts, strange alien typefaces, non-standard typefaces (Lulu lists its default fonts), then, yes, you really do need to download a complete PDF with all the pictures and typefaces fully embed.
I' ve used a 6 x 9 Microsoft Office Wordprogram that I' ve already uploaded from the web, although Lulu now provides a page layout that can be uploaded from their website. As a rule, the online available templates are more comprehensive and include cover pages, copyrights pages, index pages, chapters, etc.
It' s just a question of copy the text from your source text and make a specific insert to keep the default format in the document. To give you an idea of your entire Lulu books projects, I would admit that you need to be quite good with Word if this is to be your selection of files, and don't practise any rotten practices such as using the Spacebar to place text and not using the correct indent in paragraphs, and so on.
I can give you the best piece of advise is to select your favorite textbook from your bookcase at home and copy it into your work. I mean the most optically attractive when I say favorite textbook. The majority of serially published works have a fairly uniform lay-out, differing only in terms of styling styles, sizes and fonts, number of words per page, and so on.
Keep in mind that your textbook should look as professionally as possible. They look like amateurs from the very first minute, let alone read: the text, the text, the gimmicky font, badly oriented edges, empty rows between the heels, excessive indentations (or no indentations at all!), page numbers on copyrights and covers, copyrights pages that have'©Sid Snott 2008', and nothing more.
The last thing I feel about Lulu for my own books is that you won't do it right the first try. When you really want a ready-made copy to go to your front door that you can be satisfied with, then get your files ready, when you see them on Lulu's preview, you'll want to make changes, edit your files, and try again.
Do not authorize the definitive copy until the first copy is on your front door and you have thoroughly inspected the inside and outside for defects and faulty paper. Recall, Lulu accounts may seem reasonably priced on their own showcase, but there are sizeable surcharges if you opt for a wholesale package and it becomes available on the Internet retail stores such as Barnes & Noble and Amazon, Waterstones and Blackwell.
The Lulu service was reworked in summer 2009 and has three ways of distributing it. As a result, your books are only available through Lulu and Amazon, but at no off. It will list your work in the main bibliographical data bases, in all on-line shops and in brickworks and mortars bookstores that can order it at the customer's request.
While Lulu has abandoned the previously beloved Publishing by You feature, Lulu allows writers to use their own dedicated ISBNs that they have already purchased directly from the ISBNs. For those who use Lulu's service, it is important that the proofing and reviewing phase is crucial for everything to work and look just right if you want to prevent the frustrations of authorizing the script and still find it full of inaccuracies.
Should you plan to use Lulu a few occasions, or in this regard any printer/publishing services, I would suggest you contact the ISBN office directly and buy a 10 ISBN's pad for £108 ($275). On one leg, Lulu was way ahead. Now there seems to be a move towards the more traditional publisher bundles, and they are no longer quite the same thrilling and competive DII publication game.
They are still top-quality for writers, but they no longer have Createspace's pricing power and I think more will be added in the course of next year. Like many free facility providers, books are usually priced high, and the writer is trapped between the need to make a reasonable fee margin, which allows Lulu to exceed the reserve but also to make the selling point of his books as marketable as possible.
However, Lulu is still an extraordinary choice for the self-publisher writer with a number of features that few others can come up against. When you want to tackle the thrill of a self-published directory projects and aren't worried about getting your hand filthy - outside Createspace or going directly to Lightningource - then you can't go too far for a first self-publishing experi¬ence.
As self-publishers become more competitively priced, serious self-publishers may find that Lulu has restrictions if the product is meant to be a seriously profitable one.
