A former editor-in-chief of the First Amendment Center website, he has worked in the fields of humanitarian, educational and promotional work. Buchananan received a bachelor's and master's degrees in English language and culture from Indiana University and the State University of New York, respectively.

He has published poetry, review and essay in Nashville Tennessean, Literary Matters, Modern Age, Cumberland River Review, Potomac Review and elsewhere.
