Studying novels in England
I' ve authored several books, one of which sells over a million of them. Much of my response is more to English mother-tongue people who often tell me that they have been writing a novel (or want to be writing a novel) and they want to know how to publish it.
I usually ask if they have typed slightly less than a novel, and they don't have. I' ve worked for the papers for several years. The traditional way of working with a newspaper is with words and phrases that are understandable to 12-year-olds. Since the items are very brief, it gives you the opportunity to work on a good work with something relatively new.
If you type what the editors asks of you, you can have the immediate satisfaction of seeing it in the press. Being a novel is a big waste of your precious little effort, and if you don't even know how to survive a few easy phrases without grammatical errors, you will be investing all the while, with very little probability that your novel will ever be made out.
While I noted that your questions only mentioned fiction "as an example", I would seriously suggest something much briefer than the best way to get ready for a novel.
