Finding out what you write isn't always as simple as you think. A lot of authors, when they start, may think they are going to write a story if they are actually going to write a novel; or against. So what are you really into? Or more precisely, what should you write?
There are only 7,500 words or less in a story to convey your story, while a novel has more than ten time as many words to do the same. As a result, the shorter story size is easier. Long-What's Your Focus? No. Romanes convey a feeling of transformation, expansion and resolution of issues and conflict.
Shorts must be more concise, contain fewer protagonists and side storylines, have less complex storylines and a unique thematic. One could say that a story is a poetry to the novel's fiction. "Shelley Lowenkopf wrote in her 2007 Telling Tales in The Portable Writer's Conference that "the story doesn't have the luxuries of portraying changes; it's most inexistent: it comes close to consciousness:
It describes the story as a close-up of the scenery of a novel. Therefore, the story is often more intensive and strong. More than a novel, a brief story has the strength to convey, to disrupt and to illuminate. Prestigious writers of shorts like Edgar Allen Poe, Edgar Allen Poe, Edgar Somerset Maugham and Somerset Poe stress the importance of the quest for an effect when you write a shorts: the only effect you want to end up leaving with the readers.
Bickham, in his Elements of Fiction Writing: Scenes and Structure by Writer's Digest Books (1993) wrote that "the length of the story, the author's intent, the public's tradition and all kinds of things can influence the shape of a story". The choice of the right length to tell your story depends on the complexities of your premises and your topic.
This brief check list will help you decide whether you should write a story or something longer like a novel: Does your story have several major and side roles? is your story full of side storylines? does your story contain complex topics and storylines? does your story especially teach and alter your character? are there significant changes in your story? does your story contain several attitudes and side storylines? does your story research several different conceptions as against one major notion?
After answering "Yes" to most of these questions, you should write a novel. In the following chart, the Science Fiction & Fantasy Writers of America have determined the length of the story. As a prospective writer working on my second unreleased novel, I chose to write shorts.
I have been repeatedly reminded that it is simpler to write shorts (the markets are much more diverse) and they offered great conditions for marketing your novel. I' ve repeatedly received refusals saying that my story should be a novel! Took a while to learn the skill of storytelling.
However, when I did, I realised that I had learnt a great deal about telling tales that I could use in my novel. When I was willing to release my novel, I had several brief novels behind me to show that my work could be sold. Aha" extracts from my current novel I took and transformed them into independent shorts, which changed at least 20% of the contents and other items like settings, name etc..
Anyway, I created a strong story by concentrating on the individual elements. I' ve thus been selling at least five of my shorts to good magazine. My books won accolades, prizes and a place in some "best of" ethologies long before my books became similar.
Anyway, the story became a much stronger variation of the work in my novel, similar to a verse to a play of walk.
