Historical fiction: and Authenticity 7 Tips
There is a strange kind of suspense that appears when you write historical fiction: It is possible to reach a perfect historical precision and still tell a great tale? My doctorate is in early contemporary British historiography, the time when I presented my historical enigmas, Aurder at Rosamund at Rosamund and From the Charred Warrants.
As a novel writer, I have thought a great deal about how to create a work of historical cliché. The first time I dreamt of my novel, even before I had worked out the storyline or the character, I knew one thing for sure: this novel would be exact. Histicians everywhere would use my work in their building and indulge in my close past.
The second part of the show, From the Charred Resains, will be published in April 2014. It is not only that the use of a precise tongue makes my history needlessly pendant and ponderous, many words and sentences from the 17th c. cannot easily be translated today.
This is not too practicable unless my journalist lets me write an accompanying book with a dictionary and descriptive notes. Also, and perhaps more important, I realised that if I had been strict about my character's faithfulness to the times, I could have been a little good-natured. Those are some lesson I have learnt in this balancing of genuineness and precision.
Familiarize yourself with the timeframe. Attempt both to comprehend the greater extent of the menstrual cycle and to examine everyday living as well. It will help to provide an authentically scenic setting for your novel. Get the character involved in the historical detail. That goes hand in hand with the fact that "show don't tell" is often said to the authors.
Instead of just throwing a heap of facts at the impoverished readers, let your character interoperate with all these sentiments with these intricacies. Let your character's place in the community be questioned and explored. It will help to highlight the wider contexts of politics, culture and the community. If you are an explorer, the web can be your best companion, especially for those who travel in armchairs.
Certainly the web is a repository of information and inspiration from the world of interactivity, pictures, videos and historical document. Don't worry about the detail, let the tale tell. Seek precision, but if necessary, make your best educated assumption and move on. If you have to forge something, well, that's what the'historical note' at the end of your novel is for!
