A lot of us are dreaming of entering the children's world. This is not simple, but knowledge of certain aspects of children's literary matters increases your opportunities considerably. I' m doing a kid's tale. "But what kind of children's tale? It' a textbook, a simple man, a middle-class novel?
A 3,000-word storybook won't be selling these days. No. And neither does a 100,000-word middle-class novel. The logs are for the little ones. They have very few words and many are conception guides, such as those about colours or numbers. Most of the time, boards are published in-house, which means that publishing houses do not employ authors for these titles.
Or, publishing houses turn MOO! by David LaRochelle and Mike Wohnoutka into boards. Textbooks have been enjoying an upswing lately. Less in the case of storybooks is more. I have my own textbook, Muriel's Red Sweater, only 190 words long. It' s seldom that a storybook of 1,000 words is released.
Simple reader are for 5-8 years. They' re usually levelled reader (as in Level 1 for early and Level 3 for slightly older readers.) They are 48 or 64 pages long and have special terminology rules. Entering this can be very difficult. Chapters are for children from 6-9 years.
You are between simple and medium sized novel. Mid-range stories are often regarded as the core of children's literature. Mid-range fiction is usually between 48-80 pages on the younger side and 80-160 pages at the top. Mid-range stories are often about friendship, education, humour and families.
Novellas for young adults are from 12 years or from 14 years, according to the topic. The YA novel can cover topics that are more dark and edgy than the mid-range. At the moment, young grown-up fiction is very much in demand, especially dystopic fiction. Poems and non-fiction for kids are also available. The majority of them are textbooks.
Altogether, these rules are useful when you write your children's text. At an early stage you can find out what type of textbook you are going to write and for which group.
