A lot of folks think that creativeness is a mystery property like charism - either you have it or you don't have it. Witnessed knowledge is that creativeness is one of those intangible art forms that must be a birthright and cannot be learned. She thinks it is a renewablesource that we can use at any moment.
Selig presents a new, groundbreaking novel in her new volume "inGENIUS: A Crash Course on Creativity" (HarperOne, 2012), which she describes as the "Innovation Engine" and which provides a series of hands-on instruments with which everyone can dramatically increase their own creative capacity and promote invention. It shows how to encourage and promote creative thinking, resulting in a wealth of innovative thinking from people, groups and organisations.
What is your definition of creativeness? To Tina Seelig: It is easy to identify and it is the creative generation pathway. It' is particularly important in the industrial sector because the global economy is rapidly evolving and groundbreaking concepts are needed to remain successful. The generation of new notions is actually a big challenge, because most find it hard to get beyond apparent, incremental answers.
Genuine creative skills require the capacity to explore new paths, which calls for considerable efforts. BND: What are the instruments and technologies of creative thought? TS: There is no way to get creative inspiration, just as there is no way from San Francisco to São Paulo. To make the paths to innovations much easier by providing individuals with unique instruments and technologies.
The focus is on the capability to view issues from different perspectives, to link and mix ideas and to question conventional notions. BND: Is creativeness a learnt capability or an inherent gift? TS: We are all creative by nature and like any other capability, some humans have more of nature's talents than others.
But everyone can improve their creative abilities, just as anyone can improve their music or sports skills through appropriate exercise and targeted practicing. All of us can acquire instruments and technologies that promote creative thinking and create an environment that promotes innovations. BND: What are the great legends about creativeness?
TS: Myths about creativeness are that it is not important and cannot be learnt. We see potentials instead of solving our own issues, we see chances instead of barriers, and instead of challenge we see an opportunity to find out. Inventiveness is crucial in everything we do, as well as product design, business development and the development of inter-national collaborations.
These are the abilities that can be learnt. BND: Can everyone learnt to be creative? TS: Our minds are designed to solve creative problems, and it's simple to discover and promote our ingenuity. Over the course of several million years, the entire nervous system has developed from a small accumulation of neurons with restricted functions into a fantastically complicated body that has been optimised for invention.
This can be extended with special instruments and technologies. BND: What is the innovative engine and how does it work? TS: After a decade of lecturing at Stanford University on the theme of creating and innovating, I have developed what I call the innovative engine, which shows how the interaction of our inner and outer worlds creates creative ideas.
In essence, your know-how provides the driving force for your imaginations, which is the catalytic converter for translating information into new impulses. Your setting that moves all parts triggers the innovative engine. BND: How can you start your innovative machine? TS: You can start your innovator engine by creating your knowledgebase, which finally serves as a tool box for your fantasy.
They can also create living space - or environment - that promotes creative thinking. It includes creating space for creative solutions and introducing policies, awards and incentive to strengthen creative behaviour. And the most important thing is that you can maintain the attitudes that issues are possibilities for a creative one. This approach allows you to overcome street closures and apparent responses to develop truly creative outcomes.
BND: What are the constraints on our creative skills? TS: Without the urge to develop groundbreaking concepts and the trust that there is a creative way forward, it is unlikely to be found. It is unlikely that there will be any creative growth if the arts do not encourage experimenting and rewards the creation of new notions.
Is this important for the creative proces? They are frameworks for what we see, listen to and live through the whole of our days, and these frameworks provide information and restrict our way of thinking. The ability to scrutinize and move the framework is, however, an important tool for creative solutions.
