So how long does it take to write a book?

I know it doesn't take memoirs that long to write. However, the ideas kept coming back, and finally (Geek I am) I decided to sit down and count. When would it really take to write an entire book? "People often ask me a version of these questions when they know that I am a writer. How does a book do what a blog or tweet can't?

So how long does it take to write a book?

At a recent luncheon with a couple of travellers considering to write a book, I was asked how long it took me to write mine. It' a long while. Of course, to write a book is no small task, but sometimes I wonder why it took me so long to write - and edit and rework and revise them.

Obviously, it's not the typing that lasts a long while; after I' ve written for a paper, I know how to boost heels. It is the narration of history that needs a little bit of history to discover not what to write, but how to write it. But when I told this to an editor during my second writer's residence at Hambidge Center, she had the opposite of this.

"Two years for a reworked edition of your book? It takes many writers years to write a book, she said, and a year and a half or two is a perfectly sensible one. Obviously it will depend on the kind of book you write, the length of your research or more.

It is often said that every year famous authors of novels are pumping out a book or more as I was reading somewhere that it took Rebecca Skloot a ten-year to finish her marvelous The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks. I think the only way to find the answers to this is that it will take as long as it will.

Irrespective of how many month or years you want to waste on a book, it's the kind of book you don't want to accept unless you devote a whole bunch of high value to it. So how long did it take (or does it take) for you to write your book?

A lot of authors who are considering to start their first novel wonder how long it will take to finish it. Obviously, this is not a final decision and can vary depending on many different elements. But if you understand them, you get a better idea of how long it can take to finish a book.

Let's take a look at some of them: Many of us are not in the fortunate situation of making novels our full-time jobs. But before you start, you should consider how much realistically you can spend to write your novel. When you work full-time, you will probably do most of your typing on the weekend.

It can make all the difference if you get up an early minute every day and devote part of your time off in the evenings to novelists. What is your write speed? Do you belong to the authors who sit down to write and pour everything, or do you rather write slow and consciously and think about every phrase, every single words?

Authors are all different and have technologies that work best for them - there is no right way to do this. So the sooner you write your first design, the more likely you are to keep up the pace, so try not to overcensor it. Which book are you going to write?

Your book will have a role to play when it comes to how long your novel will be. Don't forgetting the processing phase! It is important to keep in mind that completing your book is only the first step. There is still a lot to do if you hope to release your book or even to do so yourself.

Then of course there is proofreading, book covers designing, addressing agencies and publishing houses, letter mailings, drawing up a sales promotion schedule and so on. It can take as long (or longer) to process as to write your book, so it's a good idea to think about whether you want to resell your book once you've made it.
