If you publish your own books, you are paying for everything - designing, editorial, printing, publicity, sales - to get it into the shops and finally into people's possession.
You are all alone; self-publication works best for those who are good at self-marketing. When an overzealous publisher is tearing the script to pieces, an author's pleasure in the sale of a script often becomes desperate. Editors may decline to publish a work because it is too contentious, does not belong on the company's mailing lists, or just because it is not sold.
Self-editing gives the writer much greater freedom over content, layout and image, as well as where the product is sold and used.
