This is how to find the best poetry competition for you
Finding the right publishing house for your type of work is the answer to improve your chances of winning in the poetry competition and to promote your writing careers. When you were looking for a position, you wouldn't send your CV to every entry in the classified ads in bulk, but too many starting authors will take up a competition index and do just that.
First of all, you need to study widely and sensitively enough to see where your work will fit into the varied landscapes of modern poetry. Choose what is most important to you if you want to win prizes, press coverage, a broad audience, editing feedbacks or contacts with other authors. Do you know your priority Why do you want to be the winner of a poetry competition? Various competitions have different strenghts. Let's say you're buying into a volume of poetry. So if you are a teacher who can allocate the books to your grade, or if you are part of the regional poetry scene and can attend lectures in your area' s cafés, galleries and bookshops, you may not have anything against a smaller money award in return for more free copy of your winner's books.
The two prestigious, long-running competitions with more than 50 entries are the Main Street Rag's Annual Poetry Book Award and the Gerald Cable Book Award. At the same time, if handselling your textbooks is more of a daunting task, you would be better off competing with a bigger price that you can afford for your promotional endeavors, such as postcards mailshots and on-line publicity.
A number of large literature publishing houses such as Tupelo Press and Kore Press provide above-average advertising for their authors through their e-mail newsletter, but remember that they are highly competitiv. In addition to the top prizewinners, many competitions for individual poetry will feature other participants. That can be a big advantage if the competition is promoted by a renowned trade magazine.
The New Millennium Writings and Atlanta Review are among the leading literature journals that have published a good number of contest finals. A number of competitions are inviting the winner and the runners-up to an awards presentation. This can be great occasions for network and sell books, not to speak of the excitement of contacting a real people.
Search for competitions funded by groups of authors in your area where you can make useful and long-term relationships. Here the compromise is sometimes lower winnings and prestigious, in return for a more sound community of people. Academy of the Poets offers government lists of cultural activities, literature magazines, scripts, poetry organisations and more.
National Federation of State Poetry Societies also has a link list, even if it is not as up-to-date. Once your poetry is released, it is no longer suitable for most competitions. The price list of a competition can give you an idea of the sponsorship. In general, I discourage authors from taking part in a competition that costs more than 10% of the main award.
I am also not a big fans of competitions where the price is a percent of the fee won. If you do not have a fixed price, you run too much danger that the sponsors will not make the competition sufficiently known. I have seen some good small printing machines get into difficulties because they were relying on next year's charges to finance last year's commitments instead of setting aside the cash at the beginning.
Look at the appearance of the competition website. Don't let someone release your work if they let it be forgotten. That is a particular issue in poetry books and chapbooks competitions. In conclusion, let me say that I have some misgivings about competitions as confirmation of my own literacy skills.
As I recall, I was disgusting to receive my very first poetry price (an honourable mention from Cricket Magazine at the tender ages of 12) - I don't think that a following price has given me a bigger run! But you will receive much more refusal than validations, and the internalization of others' views about your value will result in a notepad or timid, non-original note.
