In the skyrocketing e-book and e-reader markets, authors are finding out whether they should be publishing an e-book or e-article. Whilst e-books are a potentially freeing and lucrative valve, they have their complexity and traps. First, the good news: e-books are very cheap to release, often even free of charge.
There' are also a variety of retail stores, as well as your own website, Amazon Kindle Direct Publishing, Barnes & Noble Nook Press and Apple iBooks Authors. This includes stand-alone websites such as Kobo (which has a self-publishing Kobo Writing Life website and a voucher page with promotions ) and Smashwords, which not only sells from their websites but also sells to large retail stores such as Kindle.
Smashwords is a very common sales tool, but many writers choose to release it separate from Kindle for better licensing fees. Amazon's Kindle Select program allows self-publishers to lend their work. They may be entitled to a Kindle royalty based on how many individuals lend their work. Amazon, however, is demanding 90-day exclusiveness, which has been objected to by some publishing houses. However, others, among them exciting writer Cheryl Kay Tardif, have reported that providing some free copies has greatly boosted the sale of other work.
A further good message is that the licence fees for e-books are significantly higher than for printed works published by tradition. As an example, Kindle provides a license fee of 70 per cent, and Smashwords provides a license fee of 85 per cent for selling on its website, and 70 per cent. 5% for revenues with partners such as Apple and Barnes & Noble.
Aside from the selling of your e-book through merchant sites, you can also directly yours it to reader through your website and use e-book sellservices such as Gumroad, E-Junkie, ClickBank and Ganxy. Every one of these sites has a different charge pattern, but you' re actually paying a charge to get your e-book for auction, although you end up getting a larger percent of the retail value than through the merchant sites.
This sale scenario is based on the assumption that you have a promotion strategy to draw readers' attention to your website, as you do not have the Amazon or Smashwords platforms. Making their e-book is a big challange for many e-book editors, and this Smashwords based analytics should be useful. It shows, among other things, which points bring the best turnover.

Even though e-book bookselling is a fast growth, it is still not a large proportion of the total bookstore. This is still largely a printed book crowd, although Amazon has reported that its Kindle e-book purchases now exceed all its printed book sell.
But as the costs for e-readers will fall further, most prognosticators believe that e-books will eventually become the most important publishing media overall. When you are writing articles, there is the poor message that less than 20 per cent of e-book purchases are for non-fiction, but this is good notice for booksellers who collect about 80 per cent of the e-book in-store.
Ebooks are also not yet part of the publishing mains. Don't assume that your e-book will be checked by the New York Times or any other large publishing company. People rely much more on comments from other people on Amazon and other sites. You can get these feedbacks yourself instead of sending your book to your favorite film-makers.
However, perhaps the most cautious message is that the low costs of the production of e-books have led to piles of "e-pollutants" - poorly spelled and poorly processed ones that are clogging the book and shutting people out. So if this sales promotion program really doesn't show a significant impact on your work, consider whether you should do so.
Obviously, if your e-book is a free-bie to publicise your trade, you wouldn't be expecting to make revenue from it, anyway. Also consider whether you should only release an e-book or use it as a supplement to a self-published printed one. An extremely common self-publishing solution is the use of Lightning Sourcing, or CreateSpaceto, to generate print-on-demand (POD) manuals and e-book editions for the many points of sale.

I' also put the text Working with Public Information Officers online. Although LIGHTHning Sourcing offers an e-book publishing opportunity, it does not redistribute it to key points of sale.

Favourite e-article sites are Thetavist, Byliner, Longform. org, Scribd and the "e-reading communities", Wattpad and Figment. Every one of them has a different publishing model: We charge reader for items, byliner link to items from other resources and Longform. org and Scribd provide free items. The Wattpad and Figment provide free e-books and e-articles by unsuccessful writers that can be coached and criticized by the reader.
As soon as an writer has the feeling that his work is available for sale, it can be released on Smashwords (a Wattpad partner) or another e-book market. In addition to the publication of contributions, there are also contribution unions, which make contributions available free of charge for other websites and Blogs. When you want to make an e-book, the first real challenges are finding out the bewildering wealth of e-book layouts.
Everyone has their advantages and disadvantages, as described in this Wikipedia-story. Here is a good piece that looks at the three most important file types and comes to the conclusion that ePub is the one. It' s best to make your book in the sizes that are favoured by the stores you want to use - for example the . mobil size used by Kindle.
You can also use distribution lists such as Smashwords to transform your book into a number of different bookstores. A further complex aspect is that the design of an e-book differs from that of a printed book. In contrast to a printed design, an e-book design allows the text to "flow" depending on the monitor area.
For example, page numbers are insignificant in e-books, and it is hard - sometimes even inconceivable - to check the location of pictures, footing notes, end notes, columns, spreadsheets, quotation marks, indexes, and other items of your work. And, given the low resolutions of the e-book monitors, the pictures are not as sharp as in printing. When you create your own layouts, some pages provide the author with extensive help for editing.

Booktango, the e-publisher, says it offers an easy-to-use publishing plattform for designing and sizing. Jutoh has also been well reviewed as an e-book coder. Multi-media e-books are more complex and costly in respect of designs and overlay. But for eBooks that require more complex page designs and/or multi-media, new applications make producing simpler.
Such as Kindle's Kindle's Kindle Form 8 e-book-format contains utilities for the creation of more visual-rich Layouts. Almost all other e-readers can use the latest release of the popular e-book standard, namely XPUB 3. Apple's free iBooks Author also provides iPad users with the ability to create engaging multi-touch e-books. There are many great eBooks about sizing and publishing, especially for Kindle, which accounts for about 70 per cent of the e-book market: But if your book contains sophisticated layout features such as pictures and spreadsheets and you're unable to tackle a sometimes technical translation task, it may be smarter to hire an experienced professional to help prepare your book for you.
A good resource for formatter are this bookmarket listing of e-book manufacturers and publishers and this listing of self-publishing gurus Dan Poynter. For a Smashwords creator, you can get a listing of writers who can formate e-books and make e-book covers by sending an email to email@example.com. Others such as AuthorLink, Bookbaby and EbokIt! provide formating as part of their chargeable publishing packages.
Whilst Apple provides very little help in publishing e-books on its iBookstore, it provides a set of suggested "aggregators" that can include layouts and other features. On a cautious note, while the shortlist contains free gadgets such as Smashwords, it also contains the grant publishing house Lulu. Whilst Lulu provides a free e-book publishing experience, such subsidies (also known as "vanity") also support payed publishing bundles of dubious value.

BuchLocker is another subsidized publishing house offering e-book converting and distributing as well. However, many e-book sales locations do not provide lay-out service, although they are still deserving points of sale. There are two more sites, Payloadz and E-Junkie, selling all your online goods.
Another, Overdrive, is distributing e-books and other materials to galleries, colleges and university.
