This is how the print-on-demand bookcast works

We' ve all overheard about it, we are talking about it, we call it by the name, but do you really know how print-on-demand-bookshop? I wrote in an article about the terminological mess that is usually used to describe the delivery of print-on-demand books, but let's briefly describe it before we get to the real workings.

Print-on-demand is a way of distributing printed matter that is possible and inseparably linked to it. They only print your order as a reaction to the order and only print the precise order quantity. The possibilities of digitally printed material enable Print on Demand to fulfil an order for a profitable work.

How does Print on Demand work? Print-on-demand providers such as Lightning Energy are maintaining libraries on request of their publishing customers. Publishing houses send to the Print on Demand Distributor (PODS) two data sets for each book: a separate data set for the inside of the publication and a separate data set for the envelope.

The first time the file arrives, it is checked for possible bugs in the system of the publishing house and a correction copy of the file is made. As soon as the publishing house has signed the copy, the books are catalogued by our sales channel, which includes bookshops, other off-line and on-line merchants, retail chains, libraries vendors and, in some cases, we can export.

Benefits for publishing houses include: the need to keep stock of stock is eliminated; book without significant revenue remains in print; the investments required to manage a large book list are significantly reduced; there is no need for wastage and no costs to liquidate tens of thousand of unsold copies. Drawbacks for publishing houses are: digitally produced book costs more per book per print per hour than book in litho print; digitally produced book is not effective for book volumes sold; the print is not as good as litho print in terms of print qualitiy and versatility.

In case the volume is of interest, it can be stored before ordering. These" pre-ordered" titles are no different from those that are otherwise manufactured and sold. One of the advantages of the supply chains is that any number of volumes, even very small quantities, can be ordered for replenishment at any while.

The security may not be managed in the sales order process at all, however, but remains available as a list for ordering. Interested buyers can find the product in an on-line listings, for example at an on-line dealer such as Amazon.com or BN.com. Purchaser places an order and if the product is not stored in a physical location in the retailer's store, the order is returned to retail stores via the supply pipeline.

The computer on the PedS drags the right data file for the front and back covers and sends it to the appropriate printer. Both parts can be bar-coded to allow the system to adjust the lid to the inside of the printer tray in an automatic and accurate manner. These two components come together in an automatic binder that trims the back of the page and glues the envelope to the back.

Then the whole volume is cut to measure and is available for dispatch to the dealer who placed the order or, in some cases, directly to the client. The close-knit delivery network is a key characteristic of the print-on-demand sales approach. Irrespective of how many copies are ordered, it allows you to print your own copies at a constant price per copy.

We have been given the print-on-demand sales approach by commercially available print media and are in the midst of a change in the publishers' world. While most of the work is still produced in off-set print, Print on Demand eliminates the need to spend tens of dollars on print before a print product is launched.

As a result, in some cases a large part of the financial risks associated with the publication of accounts are eliminated. When good scripts - or already published works - are available, there is little point in not distributing them. Print-on-demand sales have democratised the publisher processes for small-scale, freelance and self-publishing companies.

This effect should become more and more noticeable as more and more books are bought on-line. Print on Demand, in combination with fast adoption of e-books, is promising to transform the publishers' world. We have now tracked a ledger from the publishers to the print-on-demand suppliers, the sales pipeline to the end user and back again.
