I' ve been asking this in my own universe lately, and despite my innate prejudices I have one and I like it - I always try to be meaningful and honest. However, a master programme can be a great stimulus, an insubator, a filmmaker and a tonic for any innate skill you might have.
One master can help some folks get where they want to go, but it does depend on a number of things - some folks get nothing from their creative writing training, or nothing but bittering and intoxication. These are some frequently asked question you should ask yourself and others to help you determine whether the graduate program is worthwhile for you.
Would I like an MA or must I write an MA or must I have an MBA in creative writing? A MA in creative writing is, as far as I know, always associated with a basic MA in English, and you will have to attend some of these discerning reading/theory courses throughout the year. That is great when you, like me, believe that directional and intensive and discerning literacy and writing about what I am studying nourishes and inspiration my writing completely.
However, I believe that these authors have kindled my creative fire and help me to reinforce my work. If, on the other side, you do not want to use this method to study or essay, you could consider an MBA in creative writing like at the University of Guelph. The programmes focus on different workshops (UofT had only one) and on the further training of authors.
Whilst professionals may ask you to reread it, it is in a distinctly non-academic contexts. In spite of my wonderful wealth, I am encouraging prospective champions to find out which of these programmes you want. I' ve known people in my university programme who regarded the crucial classes as a complete wasting of their own valuable study hours, and they take a great deal of it.
It is very difficult to halve a graduating year full of discerning Master and Ph. D. graduates. M. A. and M. A. students also have several possible financing sources: In M. A. programmes you are qualified for the same types of scholarships (e.g. SHHRC) as college undergraduates; it's completely different in visual art programmes, although I don't really know the detail.
So how far did I get in my writing alone? Most of the time people who didn't get far enough alone are chosen because all the creative writing professionals I know have a portfolios recording pathway - you can't get in without good work.
In all honesty, if you haven't written much, but have enough pages of really good material by chance to make a book, I would still discourage it. Primary can only take you from where you are on the street to a certain number of steps. Had you been able to do these steps on your own, simply by writing more histories and poetry, you should have done so.
For some of us, I mean, I think it would be great pleasure no matter what, but it's still costly - use it when you really need it. Would you like a work-show? To my knowledge, there are no serious creative writing programmes that do not have a shop floor part.
I would say that if you think that a room full of your own age, who tells you what's not right with your work, could make you cry, or just pointless for you, you should try one, and if you still do, maybe you shouldn't go to university. My programme included the first year of workshops and crucial classes, the second year of mentoring and long projects.
But I think many of Canada's routines are the same and honest, I know folks at some who largely blown off workshopshopping and were waiting to get to the good stuff, I do mentor. If you have never done a class before, try attending an evening class or social training just to see how you feel.
"Afford " means different things to different origins; there is nothing bad with taking on students indebtedness if you are convenient with that, and the first thing you wanted to do when you are graduating is not buying a home. So I know folks who have learned through work-shopping with mates, literacy of literary genres, the casual workshop and writing a great deal of work.
Nobody will ever say that you need these creative master craftsmen to become a novelist. This may be very helpful, but it is up to you, the programme and the route.
