Masters of Fine Arts in Creative Writing
The Master of Fine Arts (MFA) in Creative Writing, located in Oscar Wilde's children's home on 1st Merrion Square and in collaboration with the Irish Writers' Centre, is offering prospective or peer-reviewed authors a one-year course of studies that explores the processes and practices of prosafic production.
Work over the past two years has featured plays that have been short listed for the Penguin Ireland Shorts Story Competition, twice for the Fish Shorts Story Competition and two finalist entries for the IWC Novel Fair. As part of a discerning workshops and in the form of a mentor, the student receives lessons and counselling in the completion of a novel or brief history series.
In doing so, the mental, psychologic, economic as well as intercultural factors that support and promote the creative writing processes are taken into account. This course also highlights the commercial and vocational context of writing, with courses by agencies and editors and master classes by renowned authors. It offers students both specialist advice on the production of a large volume of published works and a thorough knowledge of the theory and practice required for successfully participating in writing, whether as a careers or as part of a lifetime of creative work.
He/she is also trained to participate in a number of supplementary areas such as journalists, publishers, editors, on-line writing, advertisers, marketers and teachers. Courses develop a wide variety of translatable writing abilities, which include sophisticated and adaptive writing styles, the ability to respond competently to discerning and edited comments, self-management and organisational competences and a high standard of competence in the comprehension and discovery of creative work in a historic and discerning contexts.
As well as professions based directly on creative writing skill, these abilities are applied to a broad range of related commercial, educational, cultural as well as societal activity such as web site management, blogs, advocacy as well as writing grants, critique and commenting. Included in his work are the Curfew anthology of shorts, the novel Love and Sleep and The Swing of Things, and the Experimental Ereotic Novel Watermark. The MFA in Creative Writing novel workshops are taught by Carlo Gébler. CARLOGELBERL was borne in Dublin in 1954. Recent releases (all from New Island) include The Projectionist, The story of Ernest Gébler, The Wing Orderly's Tales, a compilation of tales narrated by a jailer, and The Innocent of Falkland Road, a novel that takes place in London in the 1960'.
Mr. Björn also lectures at the Oscar Wilde Centre for Irish Writing at Trinity College Dublin and is a member of Aosdana. MFA in Creative Writing is carried out in collaboration with the Irish Writers' Centre at 19 Parnell Square. For a long time the Irish Writers' Centre has been a centre of literature in Dublin, helping well known and emerging authors throughout Ireland from what Joyce described as "the centre of the Hibernan metropolis".
It is a non-profit organization dedicated to the promotion of Irish literary and writing. The Irish Writers' Centre has received many award-winning authors since its inception in 1987, among them Nobel, Costa, Man Booker, IMPAC and Pulitzer Prize laureates. This was also an important forum for groundbreaking talents, as many young authors held their first reading in the centre.
We have a wealth of knowledge and skills in the field of creative writing. It is these characteristics, combined with American College Dublin's many years of libertarian art college educational practice, that have shaped and continue to sustain the program's evolution. It is a venue for program and presentation activities, facilitating contact between MFA alumni and media professionals, as well as offering opportunities for exchange with the Dublin and Ireland literary world.
Each MFA student must be a member of the Irish Writers' Center during the year of enrolment and is invited to participate in its cultural and recreational activity, both during and after the course. In addition, the pupils are fundamentally urged to rely on the observation and other literary pleasures and inspiration that bring with them the travel experiences on the trails, byways and places that connect Merrion and Parnell.
It is intended to increase skills and self-management in the complexity of writing a novel. Teached by an author, the course will guide the student through the phases of novel design, layout, revision and completion, focusing on the control and development of story, characterization, dialog and the story.
Instructed by an experienced screenwriter, the workshops are intended to help authors create and rewrite effective idea for their own work. Pupils are given advice on the following aspect of writing shorts stories: creating, evolving and dissolving the storyline; introduction of settings and contexts; development of personalities; writing expressive dialogues; establishment of narratives, sound and styles.
It is intended to support authors in the development of abilities and technologies of literary critique, i.e. how to produce efficient, interesting and convincing book review and interpretative analysis of fictional writing on the basis of their own experiences, on the basis of knowing about the world of writing and on the basis of an understanding of the creative writing world. It provides the student with hands-on instruction on the structure and technology of the fictional writing.
On the basis of excerpts from cannonical notion, themes such as design and preparations, relationships between history and action, storyline and evolution, authoritarian and storytelling voices, authoritarian and storytelling, characterisation and hierarchical characters, individualisation of dialog, use of styles, sounds, metaphor, dictation and other literature are discussed. There will be an exchange between the participants and an expert author and other authors. By offering draft versions of their chapter for use in the room, they gain the advantage of receiving expert input and reviewing peers to assist them in the creative work. Discussing the creative writing processes concentrates on such issues as the generation and research of new literature concepts, the reflection on history and character, the development of the storyline, the refinement of phrases and heel constructions, and the development of the author's voices and sounds. In addition, they receive first-hand tips on how to support their work and how to interact with publishing houses, agencies and editorial staff as well.
Upon completion of all learned learning units, the student will be allocated an expert author as tutor to lead them through the writing of a novel, brief history or a compilation of comics. They work independently on their writing projects and meet their supervisors on a regular basis to get useful feedbacks and expert counsel.
Instructors will judge the student according to their attendance at class based on the instructor's instructions. 50% consist of evaluations in the lessons, the other 50% refer to the creative writing projects, which include a creative writing collection of about 15,000 words of genuine literature, which corresponds to about three sections from a novel or four shorts.
It may be advantageous to have a Bachelor's in a related field, but this is not a prerequisite for a Masters of Fine Arts in Creative Writing. Prerequisites for admittance to the program are a demonstrated interest in creative writing and the capability to complete and use a Master's program and creative writing classes.
Applicants for the MFA should send the Admissions Office a declaration containing approximately 500 words of interest in the course and a list of papers. A folder may contain a document or a set of up to four specimens; the total length of the folder should be approximately 3000 words.
In addition to the acquired theoretical and practical know-how for the entire period of the selected field of study, the student also acquires and develops transferrable careers from his/her field of study.
