Bible pulled from bookshelves by Christian bookshop, anti-abortionists celebrating
The LifeWay Christian Bookstores took a Bible off the shelf because the Bible was instrumental in raising funding for the Susan G. Komen Foundation, which in turn finances "planned parenthood" breastcancer work. Bible edited by B&H Publishing Group was oversubscribed on the condition that $1 from the sales of each Bible would go to the Komen Foundation.
On its website, the trust says it is giving funding for the planned parenthood and declares that the funding from the trust goes to "Planned parenthood-sponsored breastcancer healthcare programs". As Lifeway recognized that they were making a donation to a charity that also made a donation to Planned Parenthood, they issued a declaration that they "made a mistake. When Lifeway saw that they were making a donation, they made a donation.
"As our leaders found overwhelmingly concerned that some of Comen's member organizations were providing funding for planned parenthood, we began the tedious task of taking this Bible off the market," said Thom S. Rainer, LifeWay Chairman and Chief Executive Officer. "Although we have an assurance that Komen's funding will only be used for the prevention and education of early stage breastcancer, it is not in line with LifeWay's basic principles to maintain even an intimate connection with planned parenthood.
When Lifeway Christian Bookstores announces its intention to remove the Bible, Steven Ertelt, the site's creator, published a call to the world. It is not the first that the Komen-Stiftung has been asked about its relationship with the planned parenthood. In June 2011, the Stiftung made a declaration that further clarifies the link with "19 planned parenting programs".
"The press releases state that, in all cases, Comen financing will be used solely for breastcancer programmes, which will include preclinical examinations by skilled health professionals. "It is important to know that Komen only supports non-profit organisations. For as long as there are needy societies, Komen will finance the institutions that can best serve these needs".
With the Bibles removed, LifeWay is committed to "continue to look for ways to innovate in accordance with LifeWay's fundamental values".
