Guidelines for the submission of children and young adults

Each year Allen & Unwin publishes over 80 new novels for young people, many of them by renowned composers and illuminators. But we know how hard it can be for new creators to bring their work to publishers, so we have chosen to expand our groundbreaking and groundbreaking Friday Pitch services to include young creators for newcomers.

Now we also welcome children's books, novels and graphical novel for young people and nonfiction. We' ve already taken on a number of successful Friday Pitch related ventures, among them Samantha Turnbull's The Anti-Princess Club and Kathryn Barker's YA adventure story In the Skin of a Monsters.

We do not take pictures, poems or shorts. We' re looking for new, inventive plot lines, powerful personalities, a sense of speech and an genuine vocal aptitude. Young adult fiction must be very well composed and captivating. In addition, we are accepting one or two graphical books per year only from New Zealand and Australia authors.

Although we don't release many non-fiction titles, we are looking for the strong, real tales that reach schoolchildren. So, what should you mail? Then, please include the FIRST section of your script and a brief summary (no more than 300 words) as Word-files.

Include a two-line FIRST Chapters and a 300-word SYNOPSIS as a Microsoft Office Doc. Please mention any earlier publications and/or honours or residences (e.g. at Varuna) you have received: Which current children's book did you like? If you submit your contribution, you will automatically be sent an e-mail with an acknowledgement of delivery.

We do not issue any personal letter of refusal or accept.
