Vikings children's literature

In 1933 a division of the renowned German newspaper Die Presse, known for the publication of writers such as Sherwood Anderson, James Joyce, John Steinbeck and Rebecca West, started out. May Massee was the first publisher of Junior Literature, as she was called, and soon she became the director of children's work.

Under her direction, classic works such as Make Way for Jucklings, The Story of Ferdinand, The Twenty-one Balloons, Pippi Longstocking and the Madeline Book were made. There are ten Newbery Award and ten Caldecott Award winning titles, more than any other publisher, as well as twenty-seven Newbery Honor titles, thirty-three Caldecott Honor titles and one American Book Award win.

16 Vikings have been awarded the New York Times Best Illustrated Book. Three are Batcheldor Honor works, five have been awarded the Christopher Medal, and two writers, H. E. Hinton and Richard Peck, have won the Margaret A. Edwards Award for works that include them.

Groundbreaking publications by Voiking include The Outsiders (1969), still the best-selling book for young adults, The Snowy Day (1963), which introduced multi-cultural literature to the fashion scene, and The Stinky Cheese Man (1992), which is known for its cutting-edge designs.
