InDesign book design (free template!)

Sadly, the authoring utilities we use, such as Word, are not always ideal for designing a book. That' a task for industry-standard software like Adobe InDesign. There is good tidings that the prices for InDesign have become very sensible lately, but the good tidings are that it is still hard to use. You can now create a book in InDesign that you can use over and over again on any number of titles!

Please use the free template before we start, so that you can participate. Or, if you would like us to make a template for you, click on the icon "Talk to an expert". First, we make a new one. Use the following options to generate the file (as shown in the above video):

It is important to include the quotation (") at the end of the width and hight value, as InDesign is preset on Picas. The use of this smaller format gives us the versatility to use both printing machines on the same book. InDesign' high-performance capability is the possibility to configure Master Pages. Consider it as a range of patterns that we use to create pages throughout the book.

They can be created for any desired lay-out, and InDesign lets you use them at the click of a button. The next book you write in InDesign will make it easy to set up your Master Pages. We keep it easy here and make the following master page items (as shown in the above video):

Doubleclick on "A-Master" in the page pallet (F12) to access the master page publisher. Create your header: You can use the Type tool (T) to create a text border that extends across the top of the page (the violet box). Repeat this for the opposite page on the Master Page template.

Insert the text "Book Name. Create your footer: You can use the Type tool (T) to create a text box that covers the bottom of the page. Select Type > Insert Special Characters > Markers > Current Page Number. That is your page number if you use this master page on current pages.

Repeat step 1-3 for the opposite page in the master page template. Set up your text area: After you have set up your banners and footing lines, we will be creating our body text area. You can use the T tool to define a text box between the headline and the footline. With our documents and masters in place, we can begin to think about our writing style.

We' re not going too deeply into paragraph styles here. For more information on how to construct and use them, visit this page. These are some of the popular paragraph styles you will need in a book: You should always begin with your own personal shape. As more than 80-90% of your book will use this kind of book, it should be your main focus.

You should use a typeface that is readable in large small block fonts. You need at least one headermat. Since there are very few fonts that use these fonts, it's okay to be a little more creatively with heads. Smaller, italic printed versions of our Body Types would work here.

Combo Books makes it a good plan to make a seperate InDesign file for your artwork. In order to make your artwork, follow the instructions in Stage 1, but this case you will need to insert an eighth-inch blood. The template for tacking the saddles is provided in the downloaded file. To have your book perfectly hardcovered, you need an individual back width (based on the number of pages and type of paper).

All we have to do now is print the book! Compile the book in the InDesign template you made. That would have the benefit of enabling you to create and create the book at the same times. Or you can use your favourite text editing program to edit the book.

When you are done, copy/paste the image into your InDesign documents (or place it if it is a backed up image format). If you' re finished, you can directly import your book as a print-ready PDF from within InDesign by selecting the menu path Datei > Adobe PDF-Presets >[Print Quality]..... Hopefully you had fun designing a book in InDesign.

Please do not hesitate to comment on any of the following if you have any queries. Included in the package are templates, master pages and other useful features.
