Little, Brown and Company was established in Boston in 1837 when Charles Little and James Brown established a relationship "to publish, import and sell literature".
Initially, the business was primarily a book retailer, like most of the publishers of the time, and even further backtracked its origins - until 1784, when a bookshop was opened on Marlborough Street by Ebenezer Battelle. Mr. Little and Mr. Brown began publishing the works of Benjamin Franklin and George Washington, and the early listings highlight Edward Gibbon's Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire, The Letters of John Adams, the addresses of Daniel Webster and Oliver Wendell Holmes Jr.'s emblem The Common Law.
1859 the enterprise took over the publishing right at a book with the title Family Quotations from John Bartlett. Bartlett's Family Quotations, with Geoffrey O'Brien as General Editor, was published in 2012. Little, Brown is still working to publish the highest calibre literature and non-fiction books of permanent importance.
