It is important to us before starting a discussion about your proposed book. We kindly ask you to send us a booklet instead of a complete manuscript.
Writing a book suggestion
As you all know, the book suggestion is the foundation for a succesful 10ure-link career in most areas of the arts and society. Sure, some parts of business and other areas are not book-based, but essentially the laws of the country: www. You may not know that the book suggestion should be an item in your CV.
Of course I don't mean that you should submit a suggestion with your application, but that you should devote several phrases in your application to the book suggestion and where you are in talks with the press. On this labour exchange you have to be able to talk about the book and its publisher's schedule in the first few working day, i.e. even if you are an ABD and have not yet completed your Ph.
There is no need for a book to get a position (although it is indeed the case that assistants professor with a book under their belts have an edge over new doctoral students for some jobs), but you need a book to get a position, and the more substantial this book is - as in, along with a finished book suggestion, a schedule for submitting to printing machines, real discussion with certain printing machines or best of all, a preliminary agreement - the better you will be in the open air.
I' m sure the book you've been waiting for will get you the work. OK, after recognizing the need to write a book suggestion from the beginning, we now turn to the suggestion itself. I will begin by talking in general about what you need to present to the media in order to get a deal.
It is actually a set of objects and not just a suggestion. As a rule, you do not hand in a full thesis paper to a journal. Please do NOT send your entire thesis transcript to the media! The best thesis in the whole wide universe will not be the same as a book on the market.
Nothing of this is a book that is ready for the market and addresses the broadest possible public. Each of these items is essential, especially the covering note. Today, however, we will confine ourselves to debating the book suggestion itself. Let me stop to say that you should of course look closely at the conditions for submitting the paper as set out on the media website.
And, in the ideal case, you spoke to an editorial or serial editorial staff at the media before you submitted your film. In my article How To Work the Conference (Part 3 of 3) you will find suggestions on how you can use the book exhibition of your domestic event as an occasion to meet journalists at printing machines.
Please be in no doubt that you are allowed to use different printing machines at the same time! You only have to fully disclose this in your covering note. A book suggestion is a voucher. It' s all about showing that your book has a real estate and that it will be sold. Here is the first error most authors make in the preparation of a book:
Publishing houses are in the game of earning a living - even non-profit scientific publishing houses have to keep their heads above water. It' truely that many of them want to adore and disseminate new information, but at the end of the working days they won' t buy a book unless they think it will be selling enough to make enough money to at least make a living.
It is your task to persuade publishing houses that your book has what it needs to be placed on the market in which this publishing house specializes. This means that your request and suggestion are in some way marketing materials.
Listen, listen, listen, Gary von Bubblecow (and look at Bubblecow to get more information - albeit focused on the UK - about book suggestions)! Universities' libaries are also under enormous financial pressure and have dramatically cut back on their purchase of new publications, with the result that the size of the potentially small print book markets for universities has declined significantly. See what Ken Wissoker, Editor-in-Chief of Duke Universtity Newspaper, has to say about the state of scientific publication and acquisition of collections (in another article on PhD2Published):
Today, printing machines will only approve a book if they are sure that it will make a return or at least reimburse the cost of it. So as you are conceptualizing your thesis (while you are still writing), and as you are planning your reviews (after you are done), make sure that especially in your head are the items that are the broadest, most multidisciplinary and potentially populare (think NYT readership) appellation.
Please note that the book must be longer than that. Publishing houses shy away from excessively long scripts, because more pages mean more work. Ensuring that your book handwriting is within the reasonable number of words of reference recently released in your section by this newsman.
You and your adviser may have liked your paper on the picture of the tortoise in the fourteenth and eighteenth centuries, but if there is no fair of scientists and academics who want to know more about 1) the Ottoman Empire; 2) mediaeval icons; 3) images of tortoises, then you are in difficulty.
Secondly, let's assume there are no less than three different marketplaces of scientists who are looking for more information about Ottoman tortoise images of the fourteenth and twentieth centuries, but your script carries all the traces of a classical slender, dull thesis, is far too long and hasn't been reworked at the best of times.... then you're still in difficulty.
To sum up, the book proposition shows that you have good idea, that these idea have a real marketing and that these idea are presented in a way that is ready for the marketing. There are very different views on what constitutes a good book suggestion, so I would like to begin by saying that I propose what has worked for myself and most of my fellow researchers and fellow scholars with whom I have worked in close collaboration in the fields of the arts and society.
I suggest the following: Preliminary section of one to two sections, which follows the introductory cast in Karen's Foolproof Grant Proposal-ie, begins with a major theme of great interest, discussed 2+ panels of scientific work on the subject, shows a loophole in this work, shows the urgency of this loophole (ie, the terrible effects of ignorance), presents the writer as a hero to fill this loophole, and unveiled a clear message of the book entitled Heroic Enterpriseject.
It also provides information for non-specialists on the historic, geographic or intercultural contexts, the main actors, the test stone meetings, the main documents and their interpretation, etc. Make a brief summary and breakdown section of the book suggested, giving a fundamental length of words for the final script, and then go through the sections, no more than three to four phrases for each section, with particular emphasis on the introduction and conclusion.
BRIEF Disziplinäre und Interdisziplinäre Diskussion über den wissenschaftlichen Kontext der Arbeit - who has been writing about this topic over the years, how has a great dispute developed in this area and how does this book interfere in this one? It is a brief outline of the most important works in order to create only the scientific organ.
A" Timeline to Completion" section that clearly formulates the reviews that have been/are made that erase every last trail of the thesis from the essays and complement the chapter in a timeliness and practicability of use. You' ll also be able to see the amount of patience you've won/expect to finish the book (especially important if you're on the 10ure track).
Eventually, you will publish your plans for other publication, such as magazine essays, on the basis of research and show an adept computation for the use of these essays in high-ranking magazines to create suspense and expectation for the book. The section should include a certain monthly time line for work and a time limit for completing the script for presentation.
In this section you will expressly talk about how well you want to promote the book, to whom it should be sold and how the media should best do so. Now, the notion that the markets for most scientific books are small, and this will not be changed. However, if it is a small but profound one, then you want to make sure that you do.
They will concentrate in particular on the titles edited by the media you are currently publishing and, as far as possible, directly on the main topics prioritised in their up-to-date and up-to-date listings, as well as on certain book collections for which they are currently advertising. Imagine: If your book will be the go-to case survey on go-to in introducing to the U.S. society and culture course, enrolment 350, schooled in both autumn and early semester at 25 colleges across the nation - how much cha-ching is that for the media?
If you can imagine your book as a key text for use in large scale undergrad grades, the better you will be. They may certainly mentions alumni seminaries, but seriously, how much good are 10 alumni seminaries a year, enrolling 8 college graduates each, going to do the pres? It is an often ignored factor in many types of proposals, which I believe to be inalienable.
Keep in mind that in this whole book suggestion you want to appear strong, important, authoritative, well planned and self-confident. They strongly suggest that your work will dramatically alter the state of your subject(s) and will have a great influence on science and popular debate in the coming years, and that the media would be silly to miss the chance to be the editor of your work.
Like in all professionally written documentation, the book suggestion must refuse any indication of doubt or uncertainty or insufficiency or fear. You' ll work with the media as a full-fledged pro who can rely on your skills and is thrilled to work with them on this next step in your career.
If you say, "I expect this book to have a great influence on the areas of yyyyy, yxx and qzz, and I look forward to working with us on the release of this book," is the news you are sending.
