A sketch is obligatory because it represents a structural concept for the book from the first to the last section, so you know what to insert where - while retaining a solid texture. In the course of four booklets and a fifth one, I have developed a design methodology that works well for me. In my opinion, a design can be seen as a kind of first design, a place where you work out plotter issues and create sheets so that you don't have to do so much slash-and-burn-edit later.
Please don't think I'm suggesting that contours are necessary. There are some unhappy folks I know when they make themselves plan the book in advance. No. All of us have different write scripts, and not a single one is suitable for everyone. In Word, create an enumeration of everything you can think of in this book.
You do what is necessary to create your own thoughts. I' m inclined to do some of that while working on the later designs of another book. Whenever I think of an invention, I write it down and attach it to a Word file devoted to the new history. I' m letting the inspirations come to me slowly or let my friends' thoughts rebound to make the transmission spin.
I find it particularly useful to send some of my friends to write an email about my sentiments. You give feed-back, but more than that, it's a very relaxed way of working through the idea without the pressures of formal plan. Simply cropping and inserting everything you can think of into your Word-Dokument.
Name each of your sub-plots and enter them as headers in your documents by emphasizing or formatting them bright. Dragging all bullets so that they are under the appropriate subheading. Enhance your Word documents in two broad-column format.
It may be that you want to remove the bullets to make the column width widening and adding blanks between the bullets to make them more easily separated. If you do, please store the file under a new name because you will need these bullets later. Now, you should list everything and separate the idea, but do not confuse the underplots.
Collect some different coloured 3 x 5 maps and apply each point to a map with a sticker, assigning each plot a different colour. Distribute everything on a board or on the ground and move the hands until you are happy with the order of the action. You can see where you have too much or too little of a subtle.
You' ll probably find that you have some maps that can be used in a single sequence, as well as several places where you need more maps. I' ll add them until I've settled the basic structure of the plot or I'm running out of space on my desk. I write small things in graphite on the available maps (always graphite because you have to make changes).
I' m formatting mine in Excel because it allows me to use large rectangles for typing in, but you can use any kind of calendars creator. As I sketch, I move back and forth between my maps and calendars to get a good image in my mind when something happens.
That' s especially important when you' re creating a book with many planned happenings, like the Stockcar Racing in my books. When you' ve organised your maps, find your fractions and put the numbers of chapters and scenes on each map so you can fix them if you leave them (or choose to let your cat gamble with them).
Pile your maps one by one and go back to your computer. Now, draw everything in the file in the correct order and add caption. You also have the jotted down on your tickets. To format the information, you can use your own system. The contours are made up of fat, left-aligned titles with bullets below (which may begin with an underline).
Doesn't mean you screwed up, it means the outline system is doing its work. It' s hard to see every single threads once the history is assembled, so I store the documents several time under each name. As an example, I stored my first one as a "Cody Outline". "I then erased everything from that paper that didn't influence Cody's characters.
Make sure that you do not somehow erase or confuse your source file. I' m creating and naming all my sub-plot files before making any changes to them to avoid this. After you have refreshed each and every sub plot you have to extract the changes and insert them into the master structure.
In the meantime you should have a really good overview. In order to simplify the real writeing-method, I have inserted the points of each section into a seperate paper, which is devoted to this section and is formated according to correct script-standard. I find these smaller ones simpler to manoeuvre, and only after the second drafts are all sections inserted into one large one.
I' ve got personalized "dialogue" and "picture" files, and once I've found where each of them goes, I write them down in the structure with a number (dialog #1, etc.). Then, I crop the dialogue or images and insert them into the documentation of this section. Yes, that may be a little exaggerated for some folks, but when you're busy with your typing, it will help remove the distraction.
That' s a prudent word: Their design is a street card. They can be inspire by even better brainstorming when you start to write, and your character might tell you that they don't want to do something you have planned for them.
