Writing a short story
On first glance, the distinction between a novel and a story seems to lie in the length of the story. Whereas a novel is a story that extends across pages, a narrative presents the facts in a much more concentrated way. It is said that to describe a story as a story, it should be less than 20,000 words long.
Can you really tell a story in less than 1,000 words? Consider that the mechanism of a story is different from that of a novel, so we analyse it. To write a story is to tell a story, not to transmit an anecdote. There is no place in a story for long description and comprehensive mental or emotional confusion.
That does not mean that the story must be easy and totally free of these items. A while ago I was reading a quotation that came to my mind: "The story of a novel is about a scientific universe, a story of scientific facts. "Despite their different features, both the novel and the narrative can give the reader a break to think.
Sometimes authors strive to tell very challenging tales that go beyond the boundaries of a story. Keep in mind that a story generally has a story that evolves in a short space of eternity, very few protagonists (two or three at most) and one major part. When you are not able to adjust your story to these assumptions, you may be more likely to write a story than a comic.
Suppose, for example, you have chosen to tell the story of a hungry man who, after many years of his work, has achieved career progress at the cost of his own inferiority. Every day John Doe is a pauper begging for cash at a place in the city's downtown area near the place where he worked.
These same leaders he has worked with and equaled in the past are those who now disregard him and pass him by without noticing his being there. Search for the useful part of the story; find the decisive point. That must be the most frequent tip in any book or article about the arts of typing, right?
The short story is not a synopsis of a story, but the whole story itself. With the above example, one could write that John Doe is a pauper who is begging every day on a street near the offices where he worked some years ago. Are these phrases in the story?
Anyway, they would appear in the story abstract. In order to tell the story, you have to concentrate on the actions like John Doe, who counts the tokens in his crate and realizes that it wasn't a good tomorrow because he hardly had enough for a warm drink.
Demonstrate what happens, supply the reader with vivid pictures and tell the story through actions. Very short stories must also have a beginning, a center and an end. An example, the introduction would be the mendicant who counts the coin in his own square, with the leaders covered in their cloaks and passing him.
It could be that the pauper is concerned because he needs a warm drink but does not have enough coin. That which is said is as important in a short story as that which is brought to silence. Do not explain that the pauper is feeling bad about his present condition or that he is sorry for the loss of his loved ones.
Have your reader find out. Rather than saying that the mendicant had a wife and wife and lost her along with his work, one might assume that one of the stressful leaders passing by is his sire. It' s a token that the pauper can buy himself a warm drink this mornings.
Each of the propositions in the story must be there for a specific cause from beginning to end. You' ve got a story to tell in a few words, so make the most of it! It is not necessary if you are preparing the first design, but it is indispensable in the review phase.
Analyse each of the words and phrases in detail and think about their role in history. Gauge it and let your reader breathe until the last phrase. When you declare that the mendicant was a leader and hit his boy on the streets from the beginning, you will run out of ressources for the remainder of the story.
If possible, try to add a reasonable turn, a punch or a surprising ending to the story, as it can give the text a new significance. The best thing in the example story is to introduce the reader to the ice-cold mendicant who needs some cash to get a warm drink.
Then you can declare that he was once one of those leaders who are now passing him, as this will make your reader more inquisitive about the nature. All of a sudden the mendicant recognizes a trusted masculine face in the elegance of the masses and looks for his subconscious. Beggars no longer bother because they have just got their own son's cash (the surprises are for the end).
Making a story that has a sustainable impact on your reader is one of the most challenging but important abilities. When they have read the story, it should give them nourishment for further consideration. When it can contain a turn or a strong picture that illuminates the remainder of the story, you're on the right path.
To return to the example story, it would be great if your reader didn't know whom the panhandler recognised until the end of the story. They insinuate that the mendicant is not concerned about the currency (he does not even look at it) because he has just realised that his boy has become an apprehensive manager, and he cannot stop him from making the same errors that he himself made in the past.
Make a setup with a few items. There is no room for long description or digression, but the story must have a good framework to keep your reader captivated. Select the sound, the speaker and the speech to put a very short text and pay attention to the right words.
The example story shows the attitude in the town on a cool wintry day, but you don't have to tell it all. A good reader will sense the coldness in the steam that comes from the protagonist's lips, or in the way he grinds his glove-packed fingers before he counts the coin.
Even better, let your reader see everything through the gaze of the leaders who are covered in thick jackets as they pass by the mendicant on their way to work. and I made it clear that every single words count, right?
