We' asked Sara what arouses her interest in a book suggestion and what makes her pitches a book suggestion without a second look..... VAT: How important is the inquiry letter and to what extent does it affect your application or your approval of a work? What would you suggest that the writers consider it a different category from the proposal itself?
SC: The covering letter to an offer and example material is important for my acquisitions because it gives my first idea of a work. I' d like to see a cover letter that is about one page long and a short introduction of a given proposal, its arguments and assignments and what's new about the proposal.
It' a selling point of an writer that lets me know what the product is and why I want to release it. When I am selling after having finished the cover letter, I am looking at the other material an writer has sent; when I am not being selling, I usually scan the material to see if there is something that the cover letter has not clearly conveyed, although we have already got off on the right track.
A cover letter differs from the actual proposal in that it is a much abbreviated one. This letter is a distallation of the most important idea of the proposal; it is what you want to tell me about your proposal if you only have one page to tell me about it.
It is a longer version of the proposal. By the time I started to read the proposal, my interest had already been aroused and now I want more detail and more sophistication. Why is a book suggestion so interesting? Why ignore a suggestion immediately? A lot of publishing houses have suggestions on how to post a proposal on their website, so it's a good time to look for them before you submit a proposal.
But as my listing below shows, I am expecting the writers to incorporate some of the items described there. Any proposal should, I think, contain the following: Describe your book projects. Like in the cover letter, this should contain a brief introduction to the projects and its arguments, uses and innovations.
An index with a short discription of each of the chapters. This is a section on similar titles. It is important to make it clear how your book reacts to, is built upon, and is different from the work of others, and that it is not just a warm-up and remix of others' notions. This is a section about the book you want to publish.
Describe here who you think will be reading your bookstars ( "students or graduates?" in what fields?), scientists (in what fields?), and/or a public (interested in what?). When you think your book has the capacity to be used in a class, please specify the types of class in which you think it could be adopted.
Please describe how long you think it will take to get the job done. You should take this into account if the work is already over. Notice how many other publishing houses you sent the proposal to. There is no need to mention the publishing houses, just that you have sent your projects to five other printing machines.
It is a favour to the publishing houses to let us know that you are speaking with other publishing houses. When you don't talk to other publishing houses, it's good to keep that in mind. While reading a suggestion, I always think about how a book will match the other ones we have made.
For this purpose, you could write a few of our publications that have affected your work or that are similar to your work, or you could say something about how your book will fit into our wider publisher programme. I am willing to review almost every book suggestion as long as it relates to a subject that we release and that is well-crafted.
For the first, review the sites of the publishing houses where you submit suggestions to see if they have current titles in the area you are working on by and large. You may not be right for your work if you write a book on the subject and the publishing house has not recently written any book on it.
Regarding the latter, keep in mind that a book suggestion is a pre-view of a book and the author's typing skills. If not, it gives an interviewer doubt about the author's capacity to produce a book that is clearly spelled out and reasoned.
Megawatts: So is it less likely that you are considering someone who is subject to many printing machines than contacting you specifically? When someone has just sent a suggestion to us, we usually think we are the first port of call. Sending a proposal to more than one press can have different consequences.
When the suggestion is great and I see that it goes out with other printing machines, it could start a fire under me to act quickly. It can also make me think I'm someone's backup or second option, which can make me take a job less seriously.
Understanding how many printing machines have seen a proposal also help us to clearly talk to the writer about our expectation when we submit the proposal for proof. Certain printing machines demand an exlusive audit of a design, so when the writer submits a design for inspection, he withdraws it from all other printing machines to which he has sent it.
Others, such as Temple, allow several entries, but ask the designers not to check the design with more than two other press. And we don't want to waste any of the cost of the verification procedure unless we have a certain amount of dedication from the writer (i.e. we know that we are one of their three best ways).
When a writer submits a script, we submit it for our approval, they don't tell us that it was published with someone else, and then they come up to us. Which are the similarities of the book suggestions? SC: Succesful book suggestions are clearly spelled out, clearly reasoned, contain few or no typing errors, show why a book is important, and show why the writer is the right writer for the work.
If a book suggestion has it all, I can still reject it. Much will depend on what kind of book I am looking for at any given time - and that will depend on a number of things such as my own preferences, shortlist balancing and the markets. Which errors do you see most frequently in book suggestions?
While we are generally acquiring knowledge of current topics and emerging developments in the areas in which we are acquiring, most of our writers purchase and are not professionals in any of these areas. A suggestion should only be sent to an editorial staff member of a journal. In order to find the best possible author for your book, you can look at the publisher's website to see who buys the book (s) in the topic(s) you are working on.
Suggest a book about a theme we don't release. Ensure that the publishing house for which you are suggesting the book is publishing in this section before you submit a proposal. Ensure that the publishing house has been publishing volumes on this issue in recent years. Suggest a book for a non-existent show.
We do this on a regular basis, giving the feeling that an artist is not familiar with the work we are currently publish. When you suggest a book for a show, make sure the show is still running by verifying the release date of the last book in the show. When it' more than three or four years old, the show is probably out of date.
To say you wrote your thesis to make it look like a book.
