There' s not a damn thing to become a novelist, yet for so many writers there are different times in their life when they realize they had tales they wanted to tell.
There' s not a damn thing to become a novelist, yet for so many writers there are different times in their life when they realize they had tales they wanted to tell. To many, these times come when they read the kind of book that provokes, disturbs and inspires - the kind of book that amazes us and makes us wonder if one day we too can evoke this kind of response in someone else.
In the following 25 authors tell us what impressed them so much. Choices include children's literature, YA serials, 19 th cent. classic films and real detective fiction, but they all have one thing in common: they have made someone realize their own potentials and tell these tales to the people.
The 1942 Beryl Markham memoirs, covering her early life and careers as a coach and bushwalker in Kenya, were my mother's favourite work. After I had passed on her two specimens, each of which was emphasized and commented on, it became mine. It was not a novelist, but her novel is seductively attractive and tempting and is just one of the best I have ever known.
Her lyric poetry of her propositions and observation inspire me to compose, while the adventure she shares led me to journey and see the whole wide globe as she did. There' s the stillness that comes with the dawn in a wood, and that's different from the stillness of a asleep town.
Tranquillity reigns after a rain shower and before a rain shower, and that is not the same. There' is the stillness of the void, the stillness of anxiety, the stillness of doubt. There' s a certain stillness that can come from a dead item such as a recently used stool, a pianoforte with old powder on the keys or anything that has responded to a man's needs, for fun or for work.
That kind of stillness can talk. No matter what the atmosphere or the circumstances, the essential point of their qualities can remain in the following still.
