Paper Menagerie" (2011), a heartbreaking story by Sino-American-scifiction author Ken Liu, is the first fictitious play to have won all three renowned sci-fi/fantasy prizes: the Hugo, the Nebula and the World Fantasy Award.

One of Liu's best works to this day, simple and yet profoundly touching. Against the background of an US corporation that does not accept China's cultural background, the story follows the character and storyteller Jack on his educational-romantic voyage through time, while he deals with himself, his China nut and the rattling around him.

In a reduced Prosaform Liu's story deals with ageless topics such as affection, familiy and ID. Here you can read'Paper Menagerie'. Yiyun's award-winning short story library A Thousand Years of Good Prayers (2005) is the source of this moving story by Chinese-American writer Yiyun Li, which takes the reader on a profound, thoughtful trip to his recently departed subsidiary in America.

At its most fundamental, this is a story of solitude, charity and fortune, an enlightening play that immerses you in the true essence of mankind and confronts you when you least can. Yiyun weaves genuine parts that go to the core and makes you challenge everything you think you know about relationship.

Full of dichotomy and contradiction, Thousand Years of Good Prayers explores what it means to be united and alienated at the same moment, to be so imprisoned in the present that one notices one's captivity in the past. Under her deceptive little action, Yiyun hides a weak motion through a kind of woven melancholy, sorrow and annoyance, rough and depressing.

That is a story that will be with you for a long, long time to come. Here you can read'A Thousand Years of Good Prayers'. The history of Proulx is full of strength and deep. Both compassion and brutality, Proulx is sincere in her dealings with her character, combining global issues such as charity, solitude and uncertainty to produce something truly exceptional and heart-rending.

Here you can read'Brokeback Mountain'. Cathedral' (1983) is Raymond Carver's post-modern story about the premature attendance of a man with Robert and his family. It is full of metaphor and symbols that can only be speculated but never confirmed. When there' s one thing that makes Carver so brilliant, it's the way he makes his character so alive that you can immerse yourself in their loss and diminution.

This story takes you to a pure abstraction within the boundaries of a mundane, worker-friendly house. It is a story that will make you think, but more than that, it is a story that will make you challenge all the things that you would otherwise blindfold for.

Here you can read'Cathedral'. And if there is ever a story that gives you both a shower and a fog,'All Summer In One Day' (1954) by Ray Bradbury is that story. All Summer In One Day' is a story that is not easy to remember, "a metaphor" that Bradbury himself described as "so alive that one cannot free oneself from it".

From the point of view of today's world, this history tells important stories about the constant and very realistic effects of mobbing. This is a short reading, but it really leaves a strong impact. If you are an enthusiastic sci-fi readership or not, this is definitely something you should be reading (or two..... or more!).

Here you can read'All Summer In One Day'. There are of course many other beautiful short novels not mentioned here (see here for a more complete list), but these will really give you a foretaste of some of the more vibrant short novels that can be found out there.
